The 'I'm optimistic' about the London Segment thread

London_Calling

Pleasant and unpatronising
I think it'll make a real mark - fun, but also do what it has to do (begin the branding, be a decent promo, set up the tone).

From what I've heard Page say and from what I've read I'm actually confident he, the singing girl from 'ackney, the orchestra, the dancers and the rest will do a very decent job. Fingers crossed . . . .

Maybe, it was too 'safe' for me, but there you go. Would have preferred more radical/creative ideas, and it needed levels - something then Page, or Page then something - one thing tops the other.

Yer ‘wild dancing rock chic’ from the singer would also have looked good with Page's solo.

At least nothing went wrong . . .

I hope to fuck London doesn't go down this thousands of hive-worker ant thing the Chinese do at every event. Can't do a damn thing unless there are 3,000 others doing exactly the same thing.

Some weird 'collective' subtext, for me.

It was def trying to do too many things - it needed the next 'wow' level after Page, and instead we got Beckham kicking a football . . . as a spectacle, I think that's where it properly misfired for me.

Anyone reckon that someone, somewhere, with the real capability to do substantial damage at the 2012 games is already crafting their devious "terrorist" plot?

:hmm:

It must be a really tempting proposition to some, surely?

:hmm:

Woof

Mate- you *really* didnt miss much.

It was poor beyond reckoning:D

It'll be on the news anyway!

Oh dear, only saw a little clip of it with Leona Lewis, Jimmy Page and David Beckham kicking a ball into the crowd. A bit lame. And a speech from Boris with Seb Coe gurning in the back ground. Well, gurning or cringing, not sure which :D

thought the animation/movie promo of 2012 was pretty good indeed. it was dynamic, energetic, fun but what came after (at the closing ceremony) was pretty crap. the london skyline on the double decker was a joke.

it was rubbish, i thought. not very imaginative, the best bit aboutit was the commentary telling the tv audience that this girl was chosen by blue peter and the dress that leona lewis wore was from a fashion college etc. but i was not impressed with the bus. the bus was crap. not even a proper bus. what about the routemaster which everybody says is so iconic, why didnt we use that bus? eh?
or a phine box, people queue up to have their pics taken with a phone box, we could have had people magically appearing from phone boxes and dancing around. or a whole row of phone boxes with mary poppins type dancers prancing around.
the best biut was watching clumsy old boris waving the flag. with his sleeves too long and his shirt barely tucked in, it was like watching an elderly relative doing somethign faintly dangerous after they've been on the sherry.

the tower thing that they made was interesting. i liked the effect of the people being the flame but i thought it all looked really camp and it reminded me of olympics in teh '80s when theses ceremonies were loaded with symbolism.

i thought hte whoel thing was boring but better than the concert from the mall thing. what the fuck was that?

So what was the best bit then?

With regards to the girl, why would anyone give a fuck that she was chosen by the viewers of Blue Peter? I understand that they "voted" a cat to be named Socks which turned out to be absolute rubbish. Why would anyone believe this?

Even if it was true, does anyone care? What did she do? She appeared to get off a bus and get on it again for no apparent reason  Go Team GB.

it was a at least a show of democracy that our snotty children had chosen another snotty child to represent them, as opposed to the chinese girl whose voice was used in the opening ceremony but she was deemed not pretty enough to actually appear so another child mimed along to her voice.

i shall clarify for you seen as you've gone to the trouble of quoting my apparently confusing sentiments, the nicest bit was the background to the things that they did because without that bit of context it was distinctly underwhelming
my personal highlight and the bit that made me laugh very loudly was boris.

this ceremony was not(as far as i'm aware) suppsed to be about team gb, it would be most immodest of use to use our specially allocated time to prance around saying 'nah nah nah nah na, we've got medals', it was suppsoed to convey a sense of what our games would be about.
No i don't think it did. i think it was shite.

I'm not sure how it's going to go. I remember watching the Commonwealth Games thinking they were going to be awful. As it is, I can't remember how good or bad they were, but I do remember all the drummers at the beginning. Very chaotic, but quite fun.
