The 'If i eat xxxx, will i DIE!!??? or shit my pants for a week' thread

I've had really bad food poisoning on 2 occasions, and it's really no laughing matter, when I had e-coli I thought I was going to die, it was so bad that what little energy I had was used for screaming in pain, and after the initial onslaught I was vomiting and had the shits for 3 weeks. Anyone who thinks that food poisoning is a laughing matter has obviously never had a serious life-threatening bout.

I defrosted a bit of salmon yesterday by leaving it out. Didn't eat it yesterday, so I stuck it in the fridge overnight. If I eat it this evening, WILL I DIE???!!11!!1ohnoes1!1!

Norovirus is particularly common cause of food poisoning in fish & seafood. It also retains a degree of activity at fridge tempratures & can reach toxic levels in a matter of hours. Sometthing like four-fifths of people exposed to it will also go-on to develop symptoms.

Enjoy! :p :)

That'll be going in the bin, then. Oh well. :p

What would the safe way of defrosting this bit of fish have been?
Or should it just be cooked from frozen? >bleh<

I have no idea. Probably cook from frozen but that would be a shame for salmon. :(

I've only eaten fish that I've caught & cleaned myself for a long time now & if I don't eat them fresh, I hot-smoke & refrigerate. This keeps for a good few days, although freshness is all IMO.

I've just cleared out my fridge and in the salad drawer found a bag of Italian Style Salad leaves with a use-by date of 30 December

They'd barely wilted

There was a whole tub of double cream as well for my mince pies that I'd never used :(

If the bag was sealed it'll proably be down the the crazy gasses they pump in, those things have a shelf life of months, by the time you get to 'em all the nutrients have degraded...

I bought a piece of pork pie last night from a supermarket deli counter, it was a MASSIVE piece, the end from one of those 2 foot long square pies. It was reduced to 30p, I figured they couldn't sell it if it was bad.. How wrong I was.
I took one bite and the meat was rancid. I've never tasted pork that actually tasted like a pig smells, spat it out straight away and threw away the rest in disgust. Then spent the next 3 mile bike ride spewing from the horrific taste in my mouth. Forcing the tiny bit I'd swallowed out... The whole of last night I was worried I'd get food poisoning

I've been alright today though...

Very nearly started a will I die thread... :o

Always defrost meant and fish in your fridge over a couple of days.

Unless you're me - in whcih case you:

a) cover it in hot water (prawns out of packet, salmonin packet) cos you forgot to take it out the freezer and you're hungry
b) leave it on the worktop near a window to make it warm (meat)

Yup, usually leave meat for 24-36 hrs but I'd never even consider frozen prawns - just asking for it & one of the most environment-destroying foods there is. :(

Was it covered?? I'd still eat it if it smells ok and tastes ok, but that's my attitude to most food.
I also eat salmon pate up to week after purchase even if it's not been in the fridge since Thursday(it was in a coolbag on it's way to Solfest) I was fine
