The how far will England get, thread

At which point will England be knocked out of the 2014 World Cup?

It's unbelievable how quickly opinion changes - after the first match, pretty much everyone agreed that we played as well as we have at a World Cup for 12+ years and that while Italy deserved to win, we were undone by a mistake, a good Italy team, and some bad luck (the Gerrard non-penalty).

One decidedly average performance later (where we were beaten by one man's brilliance) and we're back to being the worst team ever.

Get some bloody perspective - we lost two matches to two other teams also in the world's top 10. It's hardly a shameful performance is it, no matter how disappointing?

Innit. Young squad + difficult group meant low expectations all round. This was pretty universal I thought but still we get people taking any opportunity to pile in?

The two teams that beat England? The reigning South American champions and the most recent European runners-up.

What a fucking disgrace England are.

It's almost as though the people with an agenda to have a dig have higher expectations of the side than the fans themselves

Gracious in defeat

The English never

:D
Sorry, that doesn't even follow.

We're having a conversation about how good our opponents are in world terms. What are you talking about?

As for you cunts, you never even got to the airport ;)
Oh, is this some sort of Celt? So the perfect English reaction to defeat would be what? Sackcloth and ashes? Or some kind of realistic appraisal of performance and opponents?

If Roy had been offered the chance to go out at the same stage as Spain and Italy before the tournament started he'd have Suarezed your hand off...

So will England learn their lesson and give up on rooney,

Or can we expect more of the same at the euros

:hmm:

That will depend largely on how van Gaal wants to play Rooney at Utd and how well he does. It's been reported he wants Rooney to occupy a central midfield role, and if that's the case and it works out well then that's likely to influence his future England role too. Which may well be a good thing, esp as Hodgson doesn't seem to know where to play him up front.

Forget the rankings for a moment; lets talk about form.
This was the English media who were saying Italy were shit (well, not that word per se but that they were certainly not a classic Italian team), especially after they drew 1-1 with Luxemburg in their final warm-up.
Also, same English media speculated a few months back if Uruguay were even going to get to the finals cos they were so crap.
And yeah..they all underestimated Costa Rica's very canny qualifying campaign.

Not having a go; just pointing out some crap in the media. It's probably secretly run by the Welsh.

The media talks a load of old rubbish, everyone knows that. But like I said further up, we lost to the current South American champions and the Euros runners up from 2012.

On form, Mexico should be out already, and yet...

Mexico changed their manager last year after a diabolical start in CONCACAF. A lot can change in a couple of years e.g. Spain.
