The homework help thread

moomoo,

finding the 'generalisation' means finding a formula to work out the number of matchsticks for any size pattern.

If you think of a formula as a meat mincer, then the input here (meat) is the number of the pattern, and the output (mince) is the number of matchsticks. So you only have to put in which number pattern it is, and the formula tells you how many matchsticks you will need.

Am I making sense?

..

So when you have your formula, you can just put in n=50 and it will churn out how many you need for the 50th picture in the sequence (which you won't need to draw).

Thanks Jazzz, that sort of made sense. I was trying to work it out drawing squares in the air with my hands. :D

Anyway, he has done it now and said it was easy. He has explained it all to me and I think I nodded in the right places. :D

I think it was something to do with the number between the gap in the first and second pattern in the sequence (i.e. 4, 8, 16 = 4 x 50 = 200).

Possibly....................

Just in case anyone is waiting for the next bit of hard homework, we are ok so far this week.

He only had to draw a 'peace poster' tonight. He wouldn't let me do the colouring in though. I used to be allowed to do the colouring in. :(

What i really hate is when you help with their homework (thinks back lovingly to the Roman Games flyer).....

and the bastards don't even mark it !!!!!!

I was expecting it, at the very least, to go on the wall !

:)

Don't worry moomoo, i struggle with the maths as well !

It makes you proud when you see your work on the wall doesn't it?! :D

And if they get a sticker for work I have helped with then I get to wear the sticker for the night.
