The home of football?

id say the midlands..
its thanks to villa we have a football league, villa director william mcgregor started it in 1888. if you look at the founding menbers;

Preston North End, Aston Villa,Wolverhampton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, West Bromwich Albion, Accrington,Everton, Burnly, Derby County, Notts County, Stoke

Is that the most number of founding members ever in the Prem for 2009/10?
Villa, Wolves, Blackburn, Bolton, Everton, Burnley, Stoke. And Preston NE & WBA not far off.

Few years back only Everton and Villa would have been in the list. OK, and Blackburn.

Why is the SW so shit?

Desperately searches for a reason.. erm.. nope, can't. We'll put it down to rugby, although in reality there's only 2 SW teams in the Premiership next season. The one saving grace of the South West is Bristol City.. and i guess to a lesser extent Bath City.

In regards to the original question, I would argue that the home of football - in this country at least - would be Wembley since its where the national team (usually) plays.

thats a good point actually.... think we may have a wait for accrington though

All football threads must contain at least 18% Manchester United cocksucking, otherwise Fergie will come round and shit on your doorstep.

Ok so...

The North west has the 'greatest' teams - well Liverpool and Man Utd - in terms of trophies won.

London supplies a suprisingly large number of footballers to England squads - both historically (Moore, Peters, Hurst etc) and to the current squad

The (greater) midlands can lay claim to the football league's origins

Sheffield is recognised as the 'home' of football..

The NE? Don't make me laugh...

Is there a way of actually deciding where the home of football lay?

In terms of trophies won I remember seeing a pretty autisitic looking list/table a few years ago. Certain factors were taken into account - i.e trophies won; total points; longevity in the top divisions etc - in a bid to find the most succesful sides. The northwest and London dominated it if memory serves - Man U; Liverpool; Arsenal; Chelsea; Everton; Spurs; Man City must have made up the bulk of the top ten. Maybe the likes of Villa and Wolves were there too. Cant remember seeing an NE teams.
If you combine this with crowds - or rather more accurately which teams consistently sell out for home games - then again its London V North west.

In general there is little respect for London football - with pundits, commentators and fans alike claiming - thru sepia tinted specs and huge doses of faux-nostalgia - that other seemingly more industrial, working class and downtroden areas are the 'home/s' of football.

In order to put aside geographical loyalties cant we just agree that its Somerset or summat?
