The Henrik Larsson Apreciation Thread

In terms of profile - if he'd played in Spain it probably would have been lifted and his name uttered alonside the ranks of other great stikers in the last 10-15 years in La Liga - Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Suker, Raul, Romario, Zamarano, Stoichkov. I'm not sure anyone will ever beat Hugo Sanchez's 38 in the 89/90 season

There's no doubt in my mind that if someone like Moreintes, Diego Tristan or Javi Moreno (remember him?!) can score lots of goals, Larsson in his prime would have banged in 20+ every season.

That reminds, although this is a bit of a digression, has anyone found out if hugo sanchez is in Pro-Ev 5? I know he used to be Huno Sanquez or something like that in Pro-Ev 4 and was just ridiculously good.

I quite like the way you can restore all the greats who had obscure nationalities to their national teams and then go in for the giant killing games. Oh, and has anyone seen they've put Le Tissier in this time. God, I'm a geek.

p.s. I mean that question not to doubt how good he was, but to wonder how great he could have become.

Im sure he doesnt though. He was happy to spend 7 years in Scotland. His wife & kid loved it there. He put them first. He wasnt stuck, he chose to remain.

Just making cross thread jokes. I needed the spelling mistake to make the connection see?

You cross them and I'll head them in. :D

we know now from his time at Barca that he is one of the best strikers in Europe

Yes he scored a lot of goals in the SPL, yes he scored a lot in Europe against a few OK teams, but it's still pretty damn difficult to gauge how good he was in comparison to other greats at his peak.

I really think you should be speaking for yourself here - *we* knew he was one of Europes greaty strikers when he won the European golden boot - being that it is weighted quite heavily against those in poorer leagues i put it to you that its not really 'pretty damn difficult to guage'

He's the one package. The ultimate family sized variety pack of crisps when there is none in the pack that you don't absolutely love.

He's a fine player, right enough, but the phrase "very big fish in extremely small pond" springs to mind.

I don't mean to piss on your fireworks, but I don't think he's a patch on Henry and I can't understand why he never wanted to test himself in the Premiership or the Italian or Spanish leagues. Those leagues are the true test of a world-class striker.

shut up aylee

This thread reminds me of an old Foul! skit years ago, taking the piss out of the English television commentaries of the 1974 World Cup Final which made Jack Taylor, the ref, the real winner. Similarly, in true one-eyed fashion, we discover that last night, Celtic were the real winners of the Champions' League.

pretty sure it was Barcelona last night donna

will check ceefax for you later and let you know.

Good game last night, shame he had to do that nasty cynical cheating at the end.. god knows why he did it, tarnished him slightly in my mind.

Yeah me too, didn't have Henrik down as that kind of chap.

That's what Spanish football does to you

Holding hands up for Henrik. Twas a brave move to go to Barca, admit he's not first choice but stick in at it and come out with 2 La Liga medals and a EC Medal

I'm convinced now...good player....I take it all back

you mean like eboue diving to set up the first goal, you mean that sort of cheating....

Henrik was great at Celtic but he lost Arsenal the CL - bugger him.

Worse than Eboue was that long haired gobshite who attempted to get a penalty with his painful trip (my arse!)

I pretty much guess that Henrik said, before signing, bring me on as a sub in the Champion's League final and I'll make a goal. And only a fool would bet against it because he had the touch.

A clean, sharp, fast player with a football brain who honoured a contract because he loved the team and fans, it seemed to me.

We were lucky to have him in Scotland, just like they're lucky to have him in Spain and just like they'll be lucky to have him back in Sweden.

Class player.
