The Gymnastics has started!!

Missed it all, just watched the last 1/2 hour of it on digi and only saw the Chinese, Americans and Romanians.

Was Daiane De Santos the black Brazilian girl I saw a few days ago?
Yeah thats Daiane- she'll shine :)

Im up stupidly early watching the Mens Individual All Around live.
GBR's Daniel Keating doing ok. Thought his pommel horse routine (his speciality) was a little dull  BBC cut away to the news before we got the score.

We're being made to wait ages for Yang Wei's High bar score. It wasnt his usual excellent perfornance, but he is SO far ahead after all the other apparatus. He must have won the all-around title.

Matt Baker has just revealed that Yang Wei's wife is the Chinese gymnasatics commentator!

E2a: 5 mins after the routine we find out he scored just 14.75 for it, but he got 16s and high 15s for everything else.

Congratulations!! He is wonderful!

I'm fuming

Left the video to video BBC1 when I went to bed last night and all that's there when I got up this morning was a load of static

Gutted Minnie! Did you get see the highlights, if not its still on iplayer. It was fabulous, as was the women's individual all around last night.

Can I ask a quick question about difficulty levels and scoring?

Why do gymnasts with medal hopes often go for a lower difficulty level than a competitor?

Assuming of course you can actually complete the elements required, why wouldnt you always go for the higher starting difficulty where you can afford to lose tenths for small mistakes? [/silly question]

when scoring in gymnastics you get two scores.First you get your panel of 5 judges who mark how well you did something ( out of these the middle 3 count towards your final score) and your Tarrif score which is watched by a different judge whos job it is to decide what you performed and what the overall difficulty is ( each move has a tarrif score of its own and these are added up )
The tarrif score is added to your execution score to make your total score.

However this doesnt necessarily mean you will win with a higher tarriff because higher tarriff moves are harder to execute perfectly and therefore get a high execution mark as well
Often its better to 'play safer' by performing a lower tarrif routine and do it perfectly( so scoring high excution marks). The execution marks make up the lions share of the score.ts better to sacrifice a tenth or two on your tarrif ( one judge) than a tenth or two off ythe marks of each of the three seperate judges...( who may take more than 0.1 off you each time you make a mistake. The deductions are down to the judgement of the individual

Erm, I don't know anything about iplayer, although I might do without realising as I went on BBC website the other day and saw some clips, but I can't remember what exactly I was looking at. And anyway, what with family over from Ireland, can't exactly catch up :(

I know zilch about scoring but I would have told Melinda what you said about playing it safe and getting a perfect score

Thanks for explaining to us though :D You do realise you'll have to bump this thread in 4 years time so we can remember how they score ;)

when scoring in gymnastics you get two scores.

The execution marks make up the lions share of the score.

A fact many have moaned about.

They even made a film about it (Stick it) where our female hero fights the system by doing really hard tricks all the time. The rebel!

Part of me agrees with the fact it protects the girls from being forced to perform more dangerous routines to win. The other part of me thinks that it stiffles the greatest gymnasts who could deliver amzaing spectacles if it wasn't for the scoring system.

Another big thank you for your insights:)

Marius- I saw Stick It the other day! Lousy film but Missy Peregrym was dead cool!
And she is twice the height and probably 3 times as heavy as this current crop of Chinese gymnasts!

are you gymnast fanatics interested in the diving?

I'm watching the womens individual on red button tv (channel 1 now) it's fab  but i've become a critic very quickly considering the best dive i can do is falling in head first :D

Its without doubt the worst coming of age sport movie ever made.
Which is why i had to watch it all the way through. I couldn't believe how awfull it was and the fact Jeff Bridges was in it.
