Just got back... Slightly mixed feelings. Took about 4, 5 songs to get going but in the end was a great gig.
I'm just not sure how good a combination it is, in the end. Dulli is such a livewire, charismatic performer, gives it loads. Lanegan is impressive for his 'hewn from the living rock' gravitas, but he does just stand there. Doesn't move, doesn't react, doesn't emote, and IMO it gets dull quickly. So the handful of songs where they really bounce off each other were good, the ones where Dulli dominates were fantastic, but the ones with Lanegan taking the lead really paled by comparison.

They wheeled out Martina Topley Bird too, who I always thought was over-rated. She can't have had a monitor cos it sounded awful but fairly sure it wasn't her fault.

Sounds like I'm moaning, but I did really enjoy the gig. I guess I'd just rather have been watching Afghan Whigs :D
 
Not quite sure what the point of Martina T-B was, tbh. Couldn't hear her vocals at all :confused:.

I loved it, but there again, I kinda lose my critical abilities where ol'Red is concerned. He could sing the telephone directory and by the time he'd got to Anthony Abbot I'd be in love and want his babies.:o
 
Ok, Lanegan love aside, All Misery was a bit of a mess - partic as it came after the wonderful Live with Me. Didn't like The Body much - dunno, the vocals didn't seem to work, partic with MT-B. Still not sure about the Lanegan vocals on Circle the Fringes - it suits Dulli well and its almost like Marky-boys vocals, which come late on in the track, are kinda tacked on for the sake of it. I thought it the first time I heard it and its even more apparent live. But all was forgiven when we were hit by a wonderful Methamphetamine Blues and No.9 to end on.

i'm looking forward to seeing how they fare in Birmingham in April.

There were points were you could see Dulli wanted to really stretch out and extemporise and all that stuff he does so well, but couldn't because that's just not Lanegan's thing...

Lanegan must be fucking dull at parties. Just standing there, probably still holding a mike stand like he'll fall over if you take it away :D

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you - this is the first show after Greg Dulli got sick and had to cut short the Belgian gig and cancel the Rotterdam one.....

(but if they're anything like they were in Birmingham last week you'll have a superb show to see:cool:)
 
It was the fucking bollocks. We were right down the front and Dulli duly flirted with my girlfriend during one song where he was stood on a riser in front of us. Which made her evening.
I think Lanegan was flirting with me as well either that or his batshit eyes were going straight through me... :D

Greg dropped some references to his recent sickness but did not disappoint.

Tell you something, that man (Greg) is not fussy. He even winked at me - well, I suppose I was standing right in front of him with a cleavage to rival the grand canyon on show............
 
Ho hum - I suppose I wouldn't be doing my job around here if I didn't post up that there's another London date confirmed - Wed August 13th, Shepherds Bush Empite £15 on sale now.

There's talk of other summer shows too......
