The Greek Islands

Its more dangerous - they got chased by a wild bull when walking last time, ended up lost in the middle of nowhere and got rescued by shepherds :D

When I stayed on Poros I visited Hydra, Spetses and another one, Aegina?? One of them had very flash boats in the harbour and enough jewellry shops to rival Rhodes ... Hydra? Long time ago now and I s'pose that's all changed. Rhodes stays pretty constant though.

Hydra is still very exclusive, its so beautiful and there are no cars etc.

Spetses allowed mopeds a couple of years back and now they're a bloody nuisance.

Yep, Hydra's probably the one that sticks in my mind as exclusive.

Poros wasn't great back in the day in August - all the Athenians piling out for the weekend/holiday, absolutely packed. Plus sea urchin (or whatever) spines in the sand, sandals a must. I don't think I'd go back there, but the nearby islands were lovely.

5 years since I've been to Greece :(

Can anyone explain to me what's the attraction of the Greek islands?

Well, if you go to the right place (not Falaraki for example :D) it's incredibly laid back, calm and peaceful, not a drunk Brit in sight, turquoise waters, friendly, but not over-friendly locals, history, history, history...

Can anyone explain to me what's the attraction of the Greek islands?

For me: ancient sites/history, the wine dark sea, olive glades, freshness of the food, a sense of safe remote, contrast, ships and boats, timelessness and antiquity, immediacy, friendliness, half built, tomorrow, old grudges, pine in the wine, religious orthodoxy - byzantium v simplicity, danger disregarded, white washed hillside houses, no pressure.

The one we're going to has something like 70 beaches, some of which you can only get to by boat. As a London dweller, to be able to hire a speedboat and circumnavigate your way around it (2 hours non stop fwiw) and to stop at a secluded beach where there'll not be another soul, or maybe stop at one with a smal taverna, is something special.

Ouzo's fucking grim, as is 3 star metaxa :D
I love Ouzo. I can buy 5 * Metaxa in the offie close to me, which is what we drink when there, 5 * Metaxa and lime cordial as it goes. Aswell as the usually beautiful house wine of course.

Yeah I'm not against ouzu in itself, I equally can't stand pernod, richard and the like ... too aniseedy. Decent metaxa is well nice plus you get the brightly painted bottle for putting flowers in.

As I said, wizz around the island in a dingy speedboat and stop places like this.

Or not, and just chill on the water in your boat (this photo reminds me of mdma)

Or chill out with your partner getting slowly toasted.

Under the moon.

Or wander the pretty streets

Greece imo is a fantastic place.

Naxos is very nice - not too developed, lovely old centre of Naxos town, gorgeous beaches - ahhhhh....I want to go back to Greece :)

I LOVE ouzo too! with a bit of water in. We discovered that it doesn't taste quite the same on a wet afternoon in Brixton though ;)

See! It's got a wastebin next to it!

I hate retsina and feta as much as bog roll in the bin, but I'm still off to look at holiday websites after this. A friend of ours says Leros is nice. Also heard that about Ikaria which IIRC has a very interesting history.

I agree oryx, feta is well rank.

I am a cheese-worshipper and it's the only one I don't like.

On my first visit to the Greek islands, when I was still in my teens  and it was relatively unspoilt, I remember buying tiny little lamb kebabs (souvlaki) for the equivalent of 15p each.

You could also sleep on the beach. It was an, ahem, cheap holiday.

Too salty and claggy innit.

Souvlaki are ace, one of the best meals ever with greek salad (no feta)

Beach camping would be great
