Yeah Logans Run is cool too.

What about Dark Star ? Anyone into that ? Dan O'Bannon before Alien. People saw "Dark Star" ; didn't laugh so O'Bannon basicly re-wrote it as Alien, his thinking being if an alien loose on a ship won't make people laugh he can scare them.

"How do you know you exist bomb ?"

SLEEEEEP

I always thought the elfin-esque build was a nod to Greys tbh.

Must mention the underrated Sean Connery vehicle Outland

A muted little piece but all the right parts are their (plots a bit ropy though)

Um Outland is High Noon in Space.

Sorry GD it's a stupid poll, How can you compare Alien to Star Wars? You've not even got Solarsis on there.

Threads like this are always realy interesting, as so many people have a different definition of a particular genre. It also shows up how useless 'genre' tags are anyway. Take ALIEN for instance - sci fi or horror?

I forgot about STARSHIP TROOPERS, thats a near perfect film.

The thing about Paul Verhoeven is that he does good sci-fi. Robocop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers.. and he doesn't even like the genre...

..and I've just remembered Hollow Man and pissed on my own chips.. :(

Forbidden Planet is the best - such a good film with effects that still look great. The 1950s War of the Worlds is ace too. Mind you I can watch Close Encounters any time "Play the tones" although it does contain the single worst line of dialogue ever in film history - "Einstein was probably one of them" - a jarring moment in an otherwise flawless sequence. Goosebumps just thinking about the conversation with the mothership.

Brazil. Great fun, plenty of ideas, lots of weird innovation, good SF. Not seen Metropolis, though.

I quite liked Hollow Man :(

But yeah, for me Verhoeven scifi is a genre of its own. It's like nothing else. Absolute gratuitous mindless violence mixed with something rather more intelligent.

They're both good for different reasons. The over intellectualising on themes of sex and gender with regard to Ripley and the Xenomorphs can be a tad bit irritating though.

They're good for different reasons, but if we're using scifi as the criteria, Alien is more of a genuine scifi film imo.

I personally prefer Three out of the lot.

I've never liked Bladerunner I have never understood what all the fuss was about. To be honest it bored the hell out of me.

what, no cube zero? and how can you include fifth element and not have serenity? Poll iz all fuk dup

Wheres the option for the keanu reeves version of the day the earth stood still?

Shit list -

Dark Star - John Carpenters first feature film - tis dark, funny and brilliant.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1970s version).
Day the World Stood Still - (the original)
Brazil
Total Recall.
Robocop.

Of that list - Planet of the Apes.

2001 and Blade Runner are dull and massively overrated.
Fith Element is just shit.
