Surprised this has not been posted, truly a gem. The first side is one of the finest bits of pop music I know. Production is great as well - big up to thomas dolby - we wont mention you did all the keyboards on foreigner 4 and pyromania...still bet it keeps you in synths.

does the OP specify 'cheesy pop for kids'? no! It simply says 'pop', as in 'popular music', and that's exactly what the Teardrops, XTC, Blondie, and umpteen others did.

both (arguably) sometimes made music within the same rather broad genre. No biggie shorely?

How we are to deefine 'pop' in the future is tricky tho - imo it has been simple in the past - were the lyrics reprinted in Smash Hits and/or was the singer ever on the cover?

If so - it's pop, simple as.

As a 10 year old I remember watching the Smiths on TOTP at a mate's house, and thinking how utterly depressing it was. Any music that can induce that reaction in a 10 year old is NOT POP MUSIC!
