You're not a kid are you?
I like to think so, do you still qualify as one of "the kids" at 19?

I've already tried to define it - pop is characterised by an explicit commercial intent, strong simple catchy melodies, simple clichéd lyrics and high production values.
Fair dos, missed that before. Seems about right, to me anyway :)

Yes! The only album (and you could only do this on vinyl) with four identical sides, all of them 16mins something, except side four which didn't have a run-out groove, so was potentially of infinite length.

THAT'S what I call pop! :)

It's all gone wrong - less of the crap arty records that people put at the front of their record collections to look cool, more of the the shiny happy bubblegum variety of pop.

Yay

:D

either that, or 'what will the neighbours say'.
I think I'd just about choose "Sound Of The Underground" over "WWTNS?", but a great nomination nonetheless. I also echo "The Immaculate Collection".

I'd also say Weezer definitely qualify, as do these three guitar works;

If anyone can send me a burned copy of this deleted record I'd be the happiest knight in the realm of Logres (and I'd send you summat in return obviously) a friend and I, big Cale fans, simply cannot find it :( . Send a PM to the usual address, tia.

Lot of great albums on here but not many of them are what I call pop.

Pulp, Blur, Charlatans, Teenage Fanclub have to be Indie really.

Michael Jackson and Abba have to be Disco.

Teadrop Explodes and Buzzcocks are New Wave.

The Ramones are Punk.

Bob Dylan definitely isn't Pop.

Super Furries are ....... sort of un-categorisable really.

To quote Shaun Ryder on this one..........

"It's Dare!"

utter utter tish and tosh. well, except about the Ramones.....blimney o'riley way ya going on you'll be ruling busted out for being too punky! It's all pop music, based on groovy poppy tunes.

what's worse tho....is that Hollis was right - absolutely spot on.

Tho I'd have been tempted to say Bloack Sea or White Music by the inimitable XTC...

In a milk bar and feeling lost
Drinking sodas as cold as frost
Someone leans in m direction
Quizzing on my juke-box selection
What do you call that noise
That you put on?
This is pop
Yeah Yeah
This is!
On a walkway and moving fast
All I get is transistor blast
Someone leans in my direction
Quizzing on my station selection
What do you call that noise
That you put on?
This is pop
Yeah yeah
This is!
We come the wrong way
We come the long way
We play the songs much too loud
This is pop
Yeah yeah

Indie pop. Clue is in the title.
does the OP specify 'cheesy pop for kids'? no! It simply says 'pop', as in 'popular music', and that's exactly what the Teardrops, XTC, Blondie, and umpteen others did.

I would say pop is an ambiguous term which can encompass parts of many genres. However, it is clear that the Ramones or the Buzzcocks were more pop than the Pistols or Stiff Little Fingers say. You also get acts such as Blur who've done "Girls & Boys" and "Parklife" which are undoubtedly pop, but it would be difficult to class "Beetlebum" as pop per se. I guess pop is what the maker and listener make it.
