The greatest footballer of this generation

Can Zidane be counted as "this" generation? He is retired now.

'this generation' to me would be a player who was around their peak within the last 10 years or so.

If you were to take it as players in (or maybe just past) their prime today, then it would be between Ronaldinhio, Henry.. i dunno, there's a few contenders, but none of them are in same bracket as the first 3, and Zidane and Maldini are the only ones who will be held same esteem as Maradonna / Pele / Cruyff / Platini etc in years to come

fo real.

i trust everyone will be cheering on the toffee's tomorrow.

How he isn't listed for world player of the year is beyond me. Totti rules  True enough it's one of these two:

:D

Indeed...he might be a fat bench warmer with dodgy knees now but he's the best player i've ever seen "in the flesh" when he was at Barca. Speed, first touch and vision. And despite all his critics can consistently scored goals for Barca, Inter, Real, Milan and Brazil.

Thank fuck he never got the England armband eh? Give it to him for one game and we're all but out of euro 2008 before it starts

If we're talking of players at their peak in the last ten years, can I add Roy Keane to the list?

If I was to pick a dream XI from my time of watching footy, from about 1992 onwards, it would look like this I think;
Schmeichal
Cafu Costacurta Baresi Maldini
Figo Keane Nedved Giggs
Baggio Batistuta

if you're going to include Baggio then maybe stretch it back for Romario too?

Or Stocihkov, or Suker (when at Real),Dejan Savicevic. Still think Ronaldo and indeed Laudrup would be worthy of place ahead of Batistuta and Nedved

Romario was more of a spearhead like Batistuta than a deep-lying creator like Baggio, and such was Batigol's consistency in a tight defensive league for a team outside the big 5 he had to be included for me. As for Nedved I think he would balance better with Keane with more positional discipline than say Zidane. He's also done it for favourites at Juve and underdogs with the Czechs at Euro'96.

The two I really ummed and ahhed about were Schmeichel and Cafu, thinking perhaps Chilavert and Thuram instead, or maybe Mauro Tasotto to complete that magnificent Milan back four.

Someone mentioned Francesco Totti upthread. If he's nominated, two other one-club men in the same position should also be, in Alessandro del Piero and Raul. As it is, I think Baggio circa 1994 was better than any of them.

Okay I was ready to agree with you until you mentioned Raul who is basically a goal hanger and turned shite as soon as Morientes left. Been terrible for the last 3 seasons - so bad that even Madrid fans relaise Torres and Villa should be up front for Spain.

Still think it's got to be Ronaldo and he should be in the team ahead of Batigol.

Just to be clear, I wouldn't say any of Del Pireo, Totti or Raul qualify, it's just that you can see them as equivalent; one club men in the hole.

As for Zidane, he was very good and would be on my bench, but I do dislike the focus on any player just because they can do tricks. Nedved just edges him for me as I think he would pair with Keane better and fit into the team shape with Figo and Giggs pushing on out wide and Baggio dropping back.

Someone who hasn't been mentioned is Sinisa Mihajlovic. Worthy of consideration?

Nope....great free kicks but a racist cunt so made of fail. Plus Pedrag Mijatovic was miles better.

Another who I think would have been truly world class but injury - Redondo. He was majestic at Real Madrid.

There's not many players who have performed so consistently at the top level, stayed loyal to their club and enjoyed a career almost free of prima-donna outbursts as Ryan Giggs.
