The Grateful Dead

not into most of their stuff, but "golden road" from one of their earlier albums is an excellent track; and is short and full of energy rather than long and meandering. i find folk tend to enjoy it till they hear who it is, but the name carrys such associations it's kinda hard to see past for most;

I saw them way back in 1992 when they were still on their never ending tour.

Well.

Maybe they were just past it, by then.

When I saw them back in 1980 (methinks it was,) at the Rainbow Theatre in London they were fuckin' amazing.

That said, I was "somewhat" younger then (late teens,) and had deeply partaken of Liberty Caps and beer; deeply partaken.

Though given that the source of the Caps was a wisend, wrinkled old wizard (complete with tatty old pointy-hat, long grey beard, heavy old leather cloak, knarled wooden staff, hessian boots, etc.) winding his way through the throng, liberally dispersing the "magics" by the handful to all and sundry, from a huge sack carried over his shoulder..........it would have been churlish not to partake.

The gig went on for at least seven hours, five of which came from "The Dead".

I'll never forget that night.

A good time was had by all.

(EDIT: Jeeeeez, I didn't have my first "E" until 1987.)

:)

Woof

Just listening to their greatest hits record with my youngest brother. We both agreed that their music is a load of pants.

What do you lot think?

(Sorry that should read 'what, do you lot think?')

I like the "Live/Dead" album, and a small handful of other early stuff (Workingman's Dead, Anthem of the Sun, American Beauty, Aoxomoxoa), but that's it. The rest of it just comes across as easy listening for the terminally bored.

The idea that all electronic music somehow isn't valid because it's not played on traditional instruments, you mean?

I mean that it's a bollocks argument, lights, usually peddled by beardy, sweater wearing Mojo readers...

Not sure I said that. There's enough electronica here *gestures around room* to open a small shop. Or a large market stall.

Some electronica = good

Some electronca = bad

Grateful Dead - live or on record = shite

*mikes-up toaster and fridge*

I wasn't intending to put words in anyone's mouth, more to forestall it turning into that conversation.

Might solve your drummer conundrums, I guess. LOL and the Kitchen Appliances play the Punk Rock...

;)

after reading electric kool-aid acid test, i tracked down a live album, expecting to be blown away.

it was deathly dull. curse you, tom wolfe!

There's a couple of pleasant enough albums, Workingman's Dead, American Beauty and so on. Nothing particularly special though, sort of like a classier version of the Eagles when they're playing with discipline and a bunch of self indulgent hippies when they're not. On the other hand I have it on reliable authority that their concerts were always an excellent place to score acid.

please forgive me.

but i just read that in a Tommy Saxondale voice (with appropriate facial twitches & everything) :D

Saw them at Wembley arena on Halloween 1990, can't remember a damn thing about the gig (Way too stoned:oops: ) but Bruce Hornsby was on keyboards that gig

I will admit to quite enjoying "Anthem of the Sun" and "Live/Dead" although I don't know if I've ever listened to them sober

There's a 5 disc album of covers of Grateful Dead songs just out. Not really been able to get my head round the Dead, but enjoying what I've heard of these covers so far.

Watched the Dead do this song on YouTube, only their version is 20 minutes long and the clip features loads of hippies on acid dancing. :p
