Anyway it wasn't too long ago that the govt there called a referendum, AGAINST being told not to by Spain & GB, and voted 90+% plus to stay as they are. Sounds fair enough to me.....
At the time, the British and Spanish governments were trying to negotiate 'joint sovereignty' over Gibraltar. The negotiations were stuck on a couple of issues, the most important of which was that the two governments saw 'joint sovereignty' in entirely different ways. The British view was that it would be a permanent solution to the dispute over the rock. The Spanish view was that 'joint sovereignty' would be a transitional period leading to Spanish sovereignty.
Gibraltarians saw the whole idea as an attempted sell-out and the Gibraltarian government responded by calling a referendum in late 2002 to answer the question:
"Do you approve of the principle that Spain and the United Kingdom should share sovereignty over Gibraltar?"
The result of the referendum was as expected: an overwhelming rejection of 'joint sovereignty'. Of those who voted, 98.97% voted 'no'. (Turnout: 87.9%)
In mid-2003, Denis MacShane, who had replaced Peter Hain as Europe Minister around the time of the referendum in Gibraltar, gave interviews to a couple of Spanish papers, comparing Gibraltar to Ceuta & Melilla and making it clear that the negotiations over 'joint sovereignty' were dead.
Right so just to clarify.
If there was a significant minority of Spanish peeps on the rock and they felt strongly enough that they should by reunited with Spain. I'd support them.
Now given that Gibraltar is inhabited by an almost exclusively Pro British constituency and a very small one, who were probably drunk and voted by accident to join Spain, I don't really care that much. Especially as the minority isn't under any threat from the majority. Like I said, hardly a conflict zone.
It isn't even strategically important anymore. Aren't Spain and Britain batting for the same side?
As I've said I'm all for Independence for Gibraltar and I'm even more for Independence for England.
I s'pose that makes me an English Nationalist.
