Gibraltar

Gilbratarians are like Ulster Unionists,White South Africans and Israelis.
A load of self -important racist colonialist cunts.
Historically redundant.

Is it true they speak Spanglish. they will say somethings in Spanish and others in English during the 'same' conversation?

Elections generally are carried off in freer circumstances without occupying armies and attendant death squads dictating terms. In other words fuck off out of the country and then let them vote.

Yup, sort of. The vernacular is Llanito/Yanito. The official language - the language of the education system, administration, the courts and so on - is, of course, standard English.

(A few years ago, I saw an interview with the then Prime Minister of Gibraltar on Spanish TV. He spoke excellent Spanish, but with a pronounced English accent. I did wonder whether he was putting it on a bit to make a point.)

Its up to the Gibralterians, as they're overwhelmingly opposed to being united with Spain thenthey should stay part of the UK.

That often happens when people are at the "cutting edge" (can't think of a better word) of a language barrier. It's very scary when you start to speak half a sentance in one language and half in another! :)

Yes, they should not be forced to become part of Spain. But you are wrong to imagine that they are part of the UK. Gib is not part of the UK. It's a 'British dependent territory'. (As the Spanish are keen to point out, that's what used to be called a colony.)

Who cares? as long as they want to remain a British Dependant Territory its up to them.

So noone who voted it be handed over to Spain has any reasonable defence of their views then?

Well no tbh. (speaking for myself like)
It's not going to happen anyway and I don't think it can be described as a conflict zone.
But for how many years would Britain have a Spanish "colony" in, say, Kent?
I just don't like the idea of British dependent territories.

Is it a tax haven btw?

Do you like the idea of people being forced into a country they have no wish to be a part of?

Was going to post in General but thought P&P might be a better place

Gibraltar? Do we really need it?

In my opinion its an extension of pathetic by-gone colonial dreams. Its in a different country but the residents remain convinced they are British

Walk down the High Street and there's an M&S, a Boots, a Next..what the hell is that about?

It seems to be a bunch of hooray henrys' clambering onto to Old Britain...but in another persons' country. People compare it to the Falklands but can you imagine anyone being that bothered if the Spanish Army turned up and decided to take it?

Yeah the people voted to stay British, but they aren't! They are in a different country, miles away. They may be Gibraltan but there's more chance of hell freezing over then them becoming a fully autonomous state

If I were to totally disregard the views of the residents then I would say hand it back to Spain.

However, they have voted to stay part of Britain and I honestly believe it should be their choice.

fork me

I'm all for independance for Gibraltar. Whether they like it or not.

ridiculous attitude. If the people of Gibraltar want to stay British then they have that right.

'Northern' Ireland isn't part of Great Britian. It is part of the United Kingdom. If you are going to have idiotic views best to get your facts straight first.

Won't it be a bit tricky to remove the nukes without anyone noticing? Isn't that why they haven't bothered changing the status quo

There is now no naval base on Gib, there is a repair facility which is owned by a private company. Nuclear powered vessels & naval ships which may or may not be carrying nuclear weapons do visit Gib. But apart from the local Gibraltar Regiment there is no more permanent military presence on Gib.

I did actually mean to write UK, no idea why I put GB to be honest.

Doesn't change my opinion that a free election in Northern Ireland tomorrow would mean the six counties staying as they are now and not joining the Republic.

Really? Gosh, then they sound uncannily like a certain obscure Welsh nationalist I've come across here whose name for the moment escapes me...

...DexterTCN, Groucho, jannerboyuk, Karac, marty21, R.I.C.O., Rocket Romano and sevenstars, who have voted that Gibraltar should be handed over to Spain, against the wishes of the Gibraltarians.
  • Should Spain hand over Ceuta and Melilla to Morocco?
  • Should Spain hand over the Canary Islands to Morocco?
  • Should Andorra be forced to become part of Spain (or France)?
  • Should Catalonia and the Basque Country continue to be denied the right to separate politically from Spain?
If your answer to any of those questions is 'no', I guess it is because you support the right to self-determination... sometimes. Why do want to deny self-determination to the Gibraltarians?

Isn't there a couple of villages inside the south of france, north of pyrenees that are still 'spanish'? Point being that Gibraltar might seem unusual, but it isn't really. Anyway it wasn't too long ago that the govt there called a referendum, AGAINST being told not to by Spain & GB, and voted 90+% plus to stay as they are. Sounds fair enough to me.....

yes, very clever move on their part to pre-empt any politicised moves by Mr Bliar.
