Seeing as how there isn't sufficient interest to have a thread per major, and the Andy Murray thread leaves quite a bit uncovered....

Aussie Open then.....quite an exciting start. Wozniacki out, and now joined by Nadal and Halap. And then there's Venus Williams - knocked out by a Brit (well, sort of).

I reckon this means Murray out in round three

    Aye, think it's a good idea :)

    This, less so :p

Anyway, Konta through to the QFs.

Djokovic had a horrendous match the other day, 100 unforced errors  Just trying to make things interesting for himself? :hmm: Haven't seen any of his matches but Fed seems to be breezing through the rounds quite comfortably.

Brit's in the quarters in four out of the five competitions! And it is actually plausible that they could all reach the final, Konto's side of the draw looks eminently winnable.

Three Brit semi-finalists then, wonder what the odds on that were a couple of weeks ago

Djokovic v Federer will be the 45th time they've played each other, with both currently having 22 wins each.

I think it should be winner takes all - whoever wins this semi gets all the credited trophies and titles of the other, like conkers.

    Murray-Raonic.

Raonic is dangerous, but that's very winnable. Yet another Murray-Djokovic Aus final on the cards.

sooner or later Murray has to beat him in one

2-1 to the canadian now. Murray doing to much retrieving to get his shots off atm.

2-2. Murray fighting for his life in that last set.

Pressure cranking up now, Raonic looks to be struggling.

Murray still to get annihilated by Djokovic sadly, he looks on top form at the mo.

Been on a course so only just managed to check in with the match. That's Britons in four finals this year, and we had another in the semis! Not bad

Murray Jnr is probably fucked though, right? Longer match, a day later, and playing Djokovic in serious form.

He's got a day off tomorrow. I can't see fatigue being a factor. If anything, Djokovic has the harder task in staying focused.

Djokovic hasn't been consistently brilliant this tournament, although I wouldn't bet against brilliance in the final.

Last year, Murray was a break up in the third! He fell apart. But he can beat Djokovic, and has done so twice to win majors. They're the same age, and Djokovic isn't going anywhere, so Murray will probably need to beat him again to win another major. But he knows he can do it.

Djokovic favourite, but by no means a sure thing. I couldn't see Federer beating him, but I can see Murray doing it.

Well, well, well, Serena loses! Wasn't expecting that. Must make Murray believe he can win slightly more.

I hadn't realised until now that Wimbledon is the only tournament that has the Men's Doubles as a five setter.

Meanwhile Serena Williams left her panic room to issue a statement expressing shock and dismay.

As excuses go it's not that outrageous, particularly if she's been relatively open about using it up till now (has she? I honestly don't know). That said, the idea that as a professional athlete you or your team don't check updates to that list is pretty refusing to say the least!

She should have been more organised, after all, with all her sponsorship deals she is (was) a significant business. The drug was listed as illegal some time ago and should in any case only be used for a few weeks to clear up a specific condition so for two reasons she should not have been measured with it in Australia. Now she is facing a ban and has no one to blame but herself and perhaps her team.

The part about how and why she failed a test isn't outrageous at all. The part about why she was taking the substance in the first place is where credibility becomes an issue.

Been there, heard all the excuses in cycling years back. Sports people have not learnt a thing and should be shown no mercy. They should receive life bans, not from playing but from taking any further role in sport. The one good thing is the sponsors immediately distanced themselves from her.

Most pros and even ITF officials lauding Sharapova's bravery. Tells you everything you need to know about the prevalence of doping in tennis.

Does she have a heart condition? Young, super-fit, yet needs to take this medication? Sounds very unlikely to me - she's been taking it for years, but for a medical condition? Nah. She's been taking it for years because it aids recovery, and it was legal. Rank stupidity to continue taking it after it was banned.

There's precious little honesty on display here. She was taking it for ten years to help performance - she might at least be honest about that bit.

  29. Nigel Irritable

Nigel Irritable Five, Ten, Fifteen Years

She can't admit that because it would constitute admitting to a "generic" doping offence - it's against WADA rules to use a medical product for performance enhancement even if the product hasn't yet been individually listed.

  30. littlebabyjesus

    littlebabyjesus one of Maxwell's demons

Well, in that case, aren't they putting her life at risk by denying her her heart medicine. Except, of course, hundreds of athletes have been found to have been taking this. Hence its banning, no doubt.

    Still the polite fictions, then.

Meanwhile, the drug's inventor has come out swinging, making the same point.

    Right. No change there, then.
