The Future of Brixton

Hey everyone,

I'm a young 17 year old black girl who has lived in Brixton all my life and like everyone else I have distinguished many changes- some good, some bad over the years. Recently I have had conversations with friends and with my Sociology class at college about the future of Brixton.

It seems to me and most poignantly my peers that Brixton is changing for the worst. *It is important to note that what I am about to say may be viewed as racist but it is not meant to be seen in that negative light but it is simply the opinions of my self and my peers*

There has been an increase in the number of white middle class people in Brixton and whilst I advocate any anti-racist views it appears that they are removing the essence and flavour of Brixton, what I mean by this is we can't help but succumb to the impression that they wish to adopt the flavour and atmosphere of Brixton but still look down upon the 'original' people. Case in point when walking down Brixton with a group of friends (6 black teenage girls) we are greeted with looks of nervousness and anticipation from our white counter-parts (not least outside KFC at night time)

This also reminiscent of the time working as a sales assistant in King’s Road, Chelsea. Being a predominately white middle class/ upper middle class area I was in the minority and was greeted with interesting glances from my white peers (this was not a case of paranoia) which intensified when actually working in the shop as the body language adopted by white girls were significantly altered as if to stereo-type me as a feisty black girl with attitude, which admittedly I am but through education and experience I acknowledge there is a time and place for it.

This did not least surprise me as although our Major Ken Livingston loves to bang on (and he does bang on) about the multi-cultural, multi-racial aspect of London; true Londoner are aware that there is a severe racism that lurks within our city and is concealed (and believe me some of it is severe)

An also large multi-national company such as Subway are rivalling small African, Caribbean, Asian and other ethnic minority businesses in competition for leases and evidently with larger capital the small businesses are at lost which is a shame as it is these small businesses that give Brixton its character. Although they may bring more money they will break up the characteristics of Brixton which is probably why people were attracted to it in the first place which then lead to the more money in the area which then lead to the introduction of the larger businesses (it is a sort of Catch 22)

I can’t help but think what the white community’s reaction would be if Chelsea became swarmed with black people…their reaction to the Notting Hill carnival is interesting enough…although their reason is over security even though no other festival in London gets that sort of attention over security whether it be Gay Pride, Party in The Park, Chinese New Year etc

My biggest fear is that Brixton will turn into Notting Hill- where the black community were forced out due to a number of factors and has become a pre dominantly white area…I wonder then what will happen to the black community.

I would greatly appreciate your views on this.

What about the white/other community that were born/lived here before you?

Ladyjmx, the reason for Blagsta's confusion is that we've had a lot of heated discussions about this matter recently, and he suspects that you may be a troll. Personally, I don't care if you are or not, because what you say is absolutely true and entirely representative of how long-time Brixton residents are feeling. Unfortunately, though, you may find yourself outnumbered on these boards, which are dominated by the "nervous" (I have another word myself but no matter) types whom you describe. And that is true even if you *do* turn out to be ernestolynch.

I'm a white middle class person who's lived in Brixton for 4 years. . .

It saddens me that you see that process happening. And I'd like to think that I'm not one of the people you talk about (as the people I chat with in Brixton regularly are from diverse backgrounds). . .

Is it that you're objecting to the presence of all White Middle Class people in Brixton? Or just the ones that are rude enough to act like they don't want you there?

Thank you some one who doesn't see me as racist but as speaking my mind- freedom of speech, remember that? It's funny how people change freedom of speech into racism, homophobia when they dont't like what you are saying Can you direct me to these past threads you're talking about I want to see what people have previuosly said.

Sure, check out the "Assaulted Girl" thread in this forum. You'll find it most illuminating, and you can have a good a laugh as Blagsta tries to show off his knowledge of drugs while remaining down with the street. Free entertainment for days!

piss off you racist shit

try searching 'gentrification of Brixton'....you'll see opinions for and against the presence of 'white middle class' in brixton....

My point is that for me - Brixton is about diversity and as long as people live in-line with the 'values' of Brixton, they should be welcome irrespective of class, race, creed, sexuality etc. . . (although that doesn't get around the issue of property values getting excessive I realise - but this can be regulated by the local council)

Can you elaborate on that.

There's more people living in Brixton than the black community. What about the white community (or other nationalities/races) who were born here or who have lived here long term?

Out of interest...what is it about the way her threads are written that makes you question her 'authenticity'. . .out of interest?

Not sure..it just doesn't ring true. I might be wrong, but I doubt it. After a while trolls become quite obvious.

Who are "the black community" btw?

The african, jamican and asian... Brixton was seen ( as still is seen)as a shit hole. I'd we've had to live in this shit hole for many years until rcently due to many factors such as renovation and now the white commuinty are moving back in.

While on one hand I know that gentrification has caused many real problems which do need to be dealt with, there's just something about that which almost suggests you're pro segregation, which surely is extremely problematic itself?

Asians are classed as blacks?

So you're all part of one community are you? Errr...

Ha ha! why? beacuse I can write a decent standard of english? don't believe the papers when they say the schools are failing our kids.

I don't believe you for all sorts of reasons. I'm right too.

What the hell is a troll?! if you're gonna call me that at least tell me what it is.

It's already happened in the main part. My family moved with a huge chunk of the Windrush generation a long time back already - attracted by larger homes, better housing stock, schools and more green land. They made that choice, not new arrivals in the main case, when property values were depressed. The process is accelerating now, but it's not all about 'yuppie' influence.

Apparently the largest outcrops of the West Indian communities, including Guyanese and Trinidadians, have long since moved outwards. Streatham, Norwood and others.

Whoever by you are the way Ladyjmx (and I have my doubts) don't listen to that plonker phildwyer. Think ignorant american making assumptions about a place he only occasionally visits. There's a serious discussion about the effects of incomers somewhere, but I doubt phil's got much of worth to contribute other than boneheaded controversial nonsense.
