The fall and fall of NME

I'm sure I saw somewhere that there would be a limited return to print for the NME, possibly monthly, or a one off issue.

It keeps falling

Uhh. NME partnering with Ladbrokes. Just no.

From the same article.

A 2022 study by the Gambling Commission laid bare just how much damage gambling does to young people under 16 and their families. 78% of young people who had spent their own money on gambling in the past 12 months "did so because they regard it as a fun thing to do". A YouGov study in 2020 found "7% of the population of Great Britain (adults and children) were negatively affected by someone else’s gambling". It also found that, among those aged 18-34, 4% were deemed "moderate-risk" gamblers and 5% were deemed "problem" gamblers.

The NME have been dead to me for a long time anyway. Even before they went to being a free paper. I think the watershed was when they stopped printing on newspaper and went glossy around 2002. Even then they were always inferior to Melody Maker. Who even bothers with them now except corporate brands trying to get some cred.

Stopped paying NME any attention after my first Glastonbury where they sponsored a stage and noticed how samey all the acts on it were. Used to be good though for keeping tabs on upcoming gigs which were back then mostly in SU's of Unis in a way i don't think happens any more

I used to buy them all ! NME, Melody Maker , Sounds , even Record Mirror 🤣
There was a newsstand by Tottenham Court Road tube used to have them the day they came out, when I was at school went down every Thursday to get MM and Sounds and sometimes NME. Had hundreds, only got rid of (most) of them this year, to the charity shop. Kept me ones from the 1970s tho with the Sex Pistols in

From the title I thought this thread was going to be about Mark E Smith bringing down the NME :D

I can’t remember the last time I read a copy. Probably before the internet became easily accessible I guess.

I'd never get rid of my betting apps but that Ladbrokes (one of the apps I don't have) tie-in is awful. You have to sign-up and then you have to play the free game several times before being entered into the draw. This is just tempting addiction .

Don't remember seeing Record Mirror in Ireland but would buy the others, Hot Press and on occasion, Smash Hits or No.1.

Love going through the remainder of the collection, all those bands and movements that stalled and the hills fans and journalists would pick to die on!

What’s it to do with the NME though?

The NME is now in league with the Ladbrokes

Apparently the new print version of the NME costs a tenner! 😳 really going for the Dad rocker market.

It's not even a weekly, they describe it now as a "bi-monthly" - which I'm presuming to mean one issue every two months as the first issue of the relaunch is described as "July/August edition" so that'll be a whole SIX issues a year lol.

All this is, is just some cunt slapping "NME" on a glossy lifestyle mag and trying to harness some long lost street credentials to shift some units for a tenner each. It's for idiots. Load of bollocks.

To get into one of their promoted shows you have to sign up AND play in the Ladbrokes app. My point that was while I have always gambled on sports responsibly and often profitably a lot of susceptible kids will be introduced to this site and the landing point on the app will be those awful fruit machines. Highly irresponsible.

As a teenager I used to advertise in them all, just small ads at the back for Radio Caroline car-stickers, T-shirts, etc., and my little pirate radio magazine, I never made anything out of it, it was just a bit of fun to help promote the station, whilst sticking two fingers up the authorities, and the Marine Broadcasting Offences Act.

So you have a link that explains that?

I work in the industry and that's a disgraceful attempt at a promotion.

Ahh I had a look at NME articles on it and they seem to be edited cos of this article and a twitter outcry

NME now claiming "With no betting involved, fans must be over 18 to register for the digital hub and to access the exclusive offers and live performance opportunities offered by Ladbrokes LIVE." BUT of course you still have to sign up to the app and from there you will be no doubt be bombarded by special offers from ladbrokes.
