The End of THE END

Just got this:

Sad News

---

The End & AKA would like to announce that the club will be closing those legendary metal doors for good in January 2009. After thirteen years of innovation and inspiration, we invite everyone to celebrate the end of The End.

The End & AKA will of course be closing in style, giving the venues the send off they deserve, and the chance for the different DJs and nights to say goodbye. We will be open as normal through autumn, with September, October and November's parties rocking as usual. The farewell begins with The End's 13th birthday on December 6th, with long-time favourite Sven Vath headlining. There will follow a series of closing parties featuring The End’s closest DJs and promoters, and then a grand closing weekend on January 23rd and 24th. Regarding the final parties, Layo says "You know us, and you know what we do. We're speaking to all the key people and we're not going to go out on anything other than the most massive bang."

Naturally, it being clubland, everyone will want to know why we’re closing. Are there problems? Is everyone leaving fantastically rich? What's happening? The reality is simple. We began in a kitchen with a conversation and a dream. The club has been our life for thirteen fantastic years, but key people in the team were ready to move on, this coincided with being made an offer on the building, and we felt it time to pursue different roads. To be able to walk away now after such a journey means that the timing is right. It’s been a dificult decision, and of course we’re sad, but The End is, and has been, the most amazing experience, and we want to thank all those who made it possible and all those who have shared in our dream.

There are too many fond memories, legendary nights, key players and tall tales to go into detail in one short press release. Plus there's three whole months of cracking line-ups before we can get excited about the closing parties. So the final words, for now, come from Time Out London: "The whole End / AKA formula has been so widely copied that it is impossible to imagine what London would be like without it." Well, sadly, from January 24th, you'll have to.

It's a shame to loose a decent venue. They have good nights musically an ace sound system etc., but I never had a particularly blinding time there, the crowd was always so far up itself, and I never really relaxed. But then, I did used to go to T.R.A.S.H. and Bugged Out :D
Thing is, as far as proper clubs go it was still much nicer than F***ic

I've been to the End and Fabric once each, and enjoyed The End a lot more. Much better soundsystem too.

that's a shame, even though i am not a huge fan of the club i always mourn the loss of venue's - particularly an independent one :(

Yes. Good point.

It's one of the few 'dance' (indulge me) clubs I've been to where I've always had a good time. Never moody, nice people, so-so tunes (not my thing) to keep me interested for a couple of hours. And walking distance of home.

the end is amazing. i had my "stag" night there, plus so many other great nights that i am really gutted that it's going: it seemed to me to hit the right note of big club while maintaining the feeling that they weren't simply after your cash...

the end was overrated but it's still a real shame as the club situation becomes embarrassing for a major city like london. all those 'secret venues' round shoreditch will come to the fore i guess

there are good mid-size / small clubs i suppose but still not enough.

if i had the money i would definitely open a large fuck off megaclub

A naive question from a non dance music clubber - why all the 'secret' venue bollocks? Is it to enhance a night's reputation? Create a desire/want to be part of an exclusive thingy/scene?

Sometimes, but also sometimes cos the venue ain't quite legit

mostly they are legit. it's to give the aura of a squat party/old skool rave call the number on the night type affair. it's marketing mostly.

i've been to a couple of these venues and the only thing is they don't have drinks licenses so you have to buy raffle tickets to get a beer to get round the licensing thing.

on both occassions probably about 95% of the crowd would have some kind of seizure if it turned out to be a proper squat party :D

It hadn't had any decent nights there for years.

i beg to differ sir. the Classic records nights used to have derrick carter spinning from about 3-7 am, drinking tequila and generally 'jacking it to fuck'

laurent garnier playing all night was an occasional treat too.

i'm sad to see the negativity about the place, it pisses all over fabric imo. had many good nights at the end and will be sad to see it go. will def have a final visit before it closes.

Yes, the likes of me :D - I liked Corsica even more when it was like that

i really like Corsica.

been a few times, most recently to see Derrick Carter and Mark Farina play for free the other Sunday morning.

Off to see Sneak play next weekend. I have rarely seen a weak line up there regardless of the music type tbh.

Sneak? As in DJ Sneak?

Where? When? How much?

Every time I've seen the guy play out I've practically wet myself with excitement, he's a fucking amazing DJ...

Not been to The End for years, probably had some good times there. Might see if there's anything I fancy coming up.

Makes me feel old....remembering it opening.......and Richard-Mr C from the Shamen being involved...wonder what he is doig now as the website makes no mention of him. Loved the stairs ....sort of going underground vibe. And it cant be that bad coz my son goes there...suppose the next thing will be a reunion in years ahead.

i was there. was fun, bit quiet though.

sneak has been rubbish the last few times i've seen him. his DJing has really suffered from switching to cds in my opinion. that chicago, mixing by the seat of your pants style does not translate well to cds, he is much more boring than he used to be.
