The Draper - Guido spat

I'm curious now ...

He's of the libertarian faction that influenced Tory student politics back in the earl nineties, and has now been completely sidelined for the more electable Cameroons. Used to organise raves, and like most libertarians is pretty keen on drugs. Namechecked the LPUK a while back.

Not your average Tory.

He's not an average Tory, and my equating him to Dale is probably a bit much - two different sorts of fish. But he's still factional and party-political, and the "I'm an outsider, sniping at everyone in Westminster without fear or favour" thing is bollocks.

As well as that, while I can't say his blog is claiming to be anything more than Westminster gossip - it says that quite explicitly - the fact that it's taken to be some sort of top-flight political blog by the media says a lot about how the media see "politics" i.e. Heat with MPs.

A long time ago when the internet was clockwork, U75 was about the best hub there was for people who had been politicised by the 94CJA, granted Ed came to it via Cardiff FC, but it had a lot of other scope.
Times change, people move on, but I'd bet as our generation gets to grasp at are left of the levers of power, none of our elected representatives that ends up in high office will issue a state that as some of their best quality leisure time of their youth was spent off their heads on class A's

I doubt Paul Staines was ever an Urbanite, he was a raver etc long before this site or the internet existed...

Yeah sure, now. But for a day or so they were distracted and looked like right idiots by fueling DD's nonsense. We had a great fun laughing at both sides...:D

You know you can check back to when this started, right?

Besides, didnt you claim this was some kind of Draperist masterplan to get bloggers to not notice the continuing fuckups of the government?

 I was on the internet within a year of 94CJA (mind you, did Prestel b4 that too) and was on this site in the 90's when the wounds still felt fresh, it hurt. I only lackied at stuff, he apparently did organising which would make him a 90's marcomms expert.
I've never paid the the university of cod for a psychology qualification;) but I think there was some long standing truth in Les Edwards painting, my analysis would be that Paul Staines position with regard to tent flaps and urinals will not change considerably over time.

In knew Derek Draper when I was a student at Manchester University in the late '80s - him and his dickhead mate (Giles) once offered me out in the students union because they thought I was a Trotskyist, which I wasn't. I was however guilty of talking to a classmate who was that incredibly rare breed (now extinct) a Trotskyist in the Labour Party who had a sense of humour. Thankfully the threats came to nothing, as he and his mate were quickly surrounded by the other Trots who were hanging around in the bar (this was in the days when Trots-on-campus were not an endangered species). There was then the rather unedifying display of Trot crowing over their victory, which took the form of singing the Internationale at the defeated mini-Mandelsson and his follower.

Derek D. was later suspended from either the Students Union executive (to which, sadly, he was frequently elected) or the Labour Party for sexist behaviour - something to do with making sexually derogatory comments whilst on union/Labour Party (whichever it was) business, I can't remember the full details. All this is to say Derek D. was a bit of a prick then, so not a huge surprise that he's a bit of a dick now.

Here is another (reliable and moderate) poster from A.N.Other Talkboard on similar topics:

"Draper always was a self-important little twat. I had the unfortunate experience of dealing with him when I was involved in student politics in manchester and he's never managed to rise above that kind of childish political game playing.

he's entirely the wrong person to do anything that's media related. He lies, manipulates and when caught out has the most spectacular tantrums

...we once put a pisstaking article about him in the student newspaper at UMIST and so he destroyed the entire print run by pouring water over it - a few grands worth of damage that in a fit of pique. We did take out a private prosecution to recover the damage but he fled manchester so we couldn't serve the writ

and he resurfaced working for mandelson of course

he has some real problems related to self esteem I think - he really bigs himself up but he is incredibly hypersensitive about criticism. I don't know whether that makes him suited to be a typical blogger, belming into the dark night, or whether he's the last person who should open himself to much of the shitclownery that passes for web2.0 user interaction"

From my reading of his stuff on that scene it was all late 80s stuff, his involvement was over before the 90s really got going. And like I said I seriously doubt he's ever bothered with urban...

I first came across him due to a hatchet job the Beeb did on him with the exclusive of naming him which I took to be trying to tie him to rave not acid house though a quick wiki has him down as doing both which probably puts him at the early end, and he could well have been off doing city trading by the time things got messy. Fact is I don't know, but I'll stand by U75 having 'evolved' over the years and Mr Staines not looking for public office or a gong any time soon.
You don't have to be an opposition supporter to put sand in the governments vasaline.

ETA : Having read PS's wiki, had Fridgemagnet just called him a 'former Young Conservative activist' the effect would have been as derisory and the slight derail unecessary
