Blimey.

"I am not the Messiah, I'm a very naughty boy" :D

Actually Life of Brian was a pretty accurate portrayal of Judea/Palestine/Israel in the 1st Century CE as it showed that there were loads of people claiming to be the Messiah and loads of people claiming to be prophets and gathering followers. Check out Josephus.

The Judean people's front etc are also a good portrayal of palestinian movements in the '70s... You had the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organisation), the PFLP (People's Front for the Liberation of Palestine), the PFLP-GC (PFLP - general command), the DFLP (Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine), the PLF (Palestinian Liberation Front) and probably some others I can't remember.

-as an aside, isnt Tony Robinson a born again Christian? doesnt make adifference. jsut thought it madea good choice of presenter.

If he is a christian (and I think that he is) it's good to see a mainstream high profile christian distancing himself and criticising these end timers. They are pretty frightening people. Most people of faith can be reasoned with but this lot...... ??

Personally I think that it is dangerous to read the bible literally as it leads people to do stuff that is wrong in the modern world like wanting to re build the Temple of Jerusalem, or persecuting women and LGBT people or a whole multitude of stuff that we should have left behind. I think that the bible (and I'm thinking more of the Hebrew bible here not the christian testament that is a different subject) was INSPIRED by people having an experience of g-d but I don't believe that it was WRITTEN by g-d. Because it was inspired it means that human hands have made mistakes and stuff has been written in the context of the time it was written but that doesn't take away from the fact that it has been a work of inspiration.

I think that if you read the bible literally you are missing three quarters of it.

It looks as if the influence of the Fundies on the BUsh regime may have been played up by the Bush admin, keen to get the Christian vote - this story is not a good look for the Bush massive:

...watch the vid in that link for more...

All the bragging in The Doomsday Code doc about how BUsh calls them for advice is going to make them feel stoopid after this..

Shit, wish I'd seen this... *tootles off to UK Nova*

edit to add: Yep it's on UK Nova if anyone wants to download it.

I still think of this doc sometimes, because it was full of flawed logic. like endtimers are responsible for global warming because they are apathetic about it. endtimers are responsible for the war in Iraq, because they are one of the groups that the government allegedly takes advice from (not all that much according to niksativa).

the endtimes aren't gonna happen, but if they are, it's simply because endtimers are making it happen. and finally, Tony Robinson likes to read revelations as a metaphorical struggle between good and evil, and any bits he doesn't like, that don't fit this hypothesis, are conveniently dismissed as being part of an alleged fly-agaric mushroom trip.

there's just too much flawed logic in this doc. it bugged me.
