Oh sorry you mean Vince Welnick, the forth grateful dead keyboardist to die, it seems that he killed himself :(

Wow, I had no idea that Vince Welnick (from The Tubes) took over the Dead's keyboard slot.

I'm a bit too young for the Dead, but The Tubes used to put on some kick-ass live shows back in the late 70's/early 80's...with fire breathers, strippers, side-show freaks and other assorted circus types (their live 'spectacle' sort of pre-dated the Jim Rose Circus, as well as the Jane's Addiction reunion a few years back, by at least a decade...)

Too bad...for Vince...The Tubes never quite made it to the big time, then his gig with The Dead sort of fizzled out as well by the sounds of it.

e2a: I'm actually a little sad over this Vince news. I used to really look up to this guy as a teen in late 70's/early 80's. He played the same/first synth I ever owned (an Oberheim obX-a...for those of you who are unfamiliar with keys, this was a seven-fucking-THOUSAND dollar 8-voice keyboard, the late 70's keyboard equivalent to driving a Porche 911. I spent part of an inheritance on it...)

Anyway, Vince used to write this fucking hilarious column in Keyboard Magazine, teaching us absolutely stupid young fucks how to program these things. (Yes, back in the day, we actually had to do our own PROGRAMING. Outside of a few factory presets, they arrived from the factory...EMPTY).

Thanks, Vince. :)

:) I saw them at wembley 89ish, loads of Americans tripping off in weird costumes, amazing light show, particularly remember the bit
" Sometimes the light's all shining on me
Other times I can barely see
Lately it occurs to me
what a long strange trip it's been"

I was a bit of a deadhead until 1989

Ripple and Box of Rain are pretty good, sometimes still listen to them:)

Truckin' by the Grateful Dead:

Truckin' - got my chips cashed in
Keep Truckin - like the doodah man
Together - more or less in line
Just keep Truckin on

Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street
Chicago, New York, Detroit it's all on the same street
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream
Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings

Dallas - got a soft machine
Houston - too close to New Orleans
New York - got the ways and means
but just won't let you be

Most of the cats you meet on the street speak of True Love
Most of the time they're sittin and cryin at home
One of these days they know they gotta get goin
out of the door and down to the street all alone

Truckin - like the doodah man
once told me you got to play your hand
sometime - the cards ain't worth a dime
if you don't lay em down

Sometimes the light's all shining on me
Other times I can barely see
Lately it occurs to me
What a long strange trip it's been

What in the world ever became of sweet Jane?
She lost her sparkle, you know she isn't the same
Living on reds, vitamin C and cocaine
all a friend can say is "ain't it a shame"

Truckin' -- up to Buffalo
Been thinkin - you got to mellow slow
Takes time - you pick a place to go
and just keep Truckin on

Sitting and staring out of a hotel window
Got a tip they're gonna kick the door in again
I'd like to get some sleep before I travel
but if you got a warrant I guess you're gonna come in

Busted - down on Bourbon Street
Set up - like a bowling pin
Knocked down - it gets to wearing thin
They just won't let you be

You're sick of hanging around and you'd like to travel
Tired of travel, you want to settle down
I guess they can't revoke your soul for trying
Get out of the door - light out and look all around

Sometimes the light's all shining on me
Other times I can barely see
Lately it occurs to me
what a long strange trip it's been

Truckin - I'm goin home
Whoa-oh baby, back where I belong
Back home - sit down and patch my bones
and get back Truckin on

Driving that train, high on cocaine,
Casey jones is ready, watch your speed.
Trouble ahead, trouble behind,
And you know that notion just crossed my mind...

Back in the early 70's, at the tender age of 14, I snorted my very first lines of coke while we (purposefully) had this record playing on the deck in our parent's basement. (It was my older brother's LP).

Also, at that very moment, we were with our girlfriends, with their cute, pert developing breasts waiting to be freely explored. Thus, rather that kill our (at the time) very expensive stone on the Grateful Dead, we put on Lou Reed's "Transformer" and got down to the business of life.

My sincere apologies to all you Deadheads (I do understand your passion), but my association with the Grateful Dead ended right then and there.

And also, my sincere thanks to Mr. Lou Reed for my life's repurposing...

Wow I never realised that the dead played in madely

Did you know jimi hendrix was the first ever act to play at keele uni just down the road?

It breaks my heart to think of who I missed in Stoke on Trent back then, if only i'd have been born 10 years sooner ! Although I did see Led Zepp at Trentham Gardens

I've heard just about every GD album made between their debut and 1985 (my dad is a major-league deadhead), but only really like (and therefore own) "Live/Dead", "American Beauty", "Anthem of the Sun", "Workingman's Dead" and "Terrapin Station".
