Night Of The Living Dead

Black and White. Creepy. Gets good at the end.

Dawn Of The Dead

Zombies = Shoppers. Splatter. Not as smart as everyone seems to think it is.

Day Of The Dead

With a talking zombie. No shit.

Land Of The Dead

With Dennis Hopper. Dead people coming out of the water (New Orleans anyone?). Not worth the wait.

Grateful Dead?

Didn't know if it was a piss-take or a rip-off.

Night was great, Dawn was cool although I prefer the shorter theatrical cuts to the alleged director's cut(s) (the Argento cut was poor, too). Day I enjoyed but it was obviously intended to be more ambitious than the money could provide for.

Dawn remake was good fun, probably helped Romero get the funding he needed for Land.

No-one has done better zombie films IMO. I love some of the Fulci/"Smithee" knock-offs but the claustrophic feel of Romero's films hasn't been topped.

'Night Of The Living Dead'. End of.

Seminal c-l-a-s-s-i-c made in stark b&w on a shoestring that scared the living dead out of everyone who saw it.

I am sure no-one will agree with me, but "Day" was always my favourite.

yes, it over-reached slightly, but I loved the premise and the atmosphere and the gore was by far the best out of all the movies, which is a very important consideration in a zombie flick.

Especially when the guy de-capitates the zombie with a shovel and bats the head away like it was a game of golf!

The Romero films have a unique atmosphere to them. But I think day was a bit of a fuck-up really, its a shame there were som many problems with it.

But I think one of the best spin offs, or things inspired by the genre, has got to be the Resident Evil games. The atmosphere of all those games was fantastic, an interactive zombie film. When I think of zombies I generally think romero first, Racoon City second. While Resident Evil 4 is an awesome splatter fest its resident evil 1 to 3 that do it so well on the creepy zombie atmosphere front. And I LIKED Resident Evil the film OK, it was fun! With its corny dialogue, going back over the sets, metal soundtrack and computer game in jokes it was perfect for me! :D

I like it when Romeros' ideas are taken and changed, especially with 28 days later and the remake of Dawn, i fully back fast zombies (although i'd rather not meet them). Also any amount of demons and stuff as well.

Everyone knows they're showing them on BBC2 this week don't they...

Night was one last night. Watched it with my mate (who's not a massive film buff). She thought it was boring and not very scary. But still - she thought it was worth watching for the ending. :)

Wanna watch Dawn and Day now...

And the Dawn remake. Which has a great start and a great ending...

Anyone else know what I mean about the New Orleans thing about Land? There was adverts on tv last week with a shot of America being engulfed by darkness and a deep-voice over going: "Soon. The World Of The Living Will Become The Land Of The Dead..." cut to zombies coming up ot of water....

Bit strong. No?

I enjoy Dawn most, the balance of humour, horror and satire is near-perfect.

But I like Day too - if there are problems with it, I hadn;t noticed.

Night is a Classic. It probably is the best film, but Romoero developed his ideas much more in the following films. It scared me shitless when I first saw it, still does a bit. Spawned endless homages, not least, the Evil Dead films.

Land wasn't bad - a bit too actiony for me, but the Romero style is still there. There was enough going on regarding zombie-lore, and the satirical content (eat the rich!) to satisfy most Romero fans.

Dawn of the Dead 1979

Gruesome horror story in which the deceased return to life to devour the living. As the rampaging zombie population multiplies, four people barricade themselves in a shopping mall in a desperate bid to survive. A sequel to the horror classic Night of the Living Dead

Starring: Ken Foree, David Emge, Scott Reiniger, Gaylen Ross, Tom Savini
Duration: 145mins

Watch it! :)

I vote Dawn - balance of the mundane and the horrific is perfect. A shopping mall seiged by zombies ffs - excellent!

And I love claustrophobic "how the fuck will they get out of this one??!!!" films - yet to see Day or the new one.

I'll get back to you next week perhaps ;)

Day is the one I've seen the most....they had it in our local rental shop when I was a teenager....got Day of the Dead and Southern Comfort out every few months

'Zombie Flesh Eaters' for me.

Altho my 'fave' exploitation gorefest has to be the uncut Cannibal Holocaust.

I thought that was a bit slow and plodding, although it exists in many different cuts. One thing I love about Fulci is that he used proper widescreen for most of his stuff while other low grade directors could barely manage 1:33:1. The Italians know how to fill a frame, even if it is with a popping eyeball.

"When there's no more room in hell... they'll build another Milton Keynes."

Dawn of the Dead for me.. although i'm not sure if i've seen all of them..

which one has the chicken wrapping machine?

chicken wrapping was great.. making good use of the things that they find.. just like the wombles

i was very pissed off when they didn't include something like that in the remake, which was all dull guns and chainsaws

would say dawn, although i agree that day is vastly underrated. says a lot about the loneliness and selfishness of that era imo. also the most gory thing i'd ever seen at the time

yeah - that was pants.

Incited the same reaction in me that Revenge of the Sith did in you (nearly.....)

the dawn remake had its flaws but it also had some memorable moments. the first 10 minutes are excellent, as is the ending. the bit with guy trapped on the gunshop roof shooting celebrity lookalike zombies is pretty funny as well

so bad it's good?? and lifts you from an exam induced gloom.. only for...

but let's not go there...

too late anyway :p

Dawn of the dead, by far.
Probably because it is the most rounded of the Romero dead films. Not too much action. Loads of satirical swipes at bovine modern lifstyles. And, for me, the fact that it starts just as the epidemic is wrecking urban society, and we see this through the pov of a newscrew, struggling under government constrictions on freedom of the media. Just fucking bang on.

But, yeah, Day does have the best gore. My fave moment is the guy being ripped to pieces, to the point that you see his vocal cords stretch, then snap, in a zombie free for all frenzy. And the bastard realy deserves it too. :D

Much better than the i ate the wolrd zombie athletes of 28 days later and the dawn remake. I mean, for fucks sake, they are supposed to be dead. Always thought there was a certain pathos inherent in that.

And just had to say this, but the resident evil films were absolutley shite. very flash, very superficial, very viewer freindly. They gave you very little to think about. :p
