The Day the Earth Stood Still - any good?

The original was better and more suspenseful. Better dialogue too.

The only thing this one has is special effects, which are spectacular, but the plotting fell on its face midway through.

And WTF is "the study of biological altruism" and why would you give someone a Nobel prize for it?

Don John, Don Pedro's brother. Medium sized role, and he's rubbish.

:)

His performance in that film made me cringe. He seems like such a nice guy in interviews - newspaper and magazine ones, at least, never seen a live one - and he so wants to be a serious actor, but he. just. can't.

And he has good choices in films, too.

He's an actor I'd love to love but can only feel pity for, and avoid his movies.

Keanu Reeves plays Earth's defender against the evil English robot.

At the end, just before he knocks off the robot's head with a baseball bat, he quips "Klaatu barada nikto, bitch!"

Keanu's Japanese conversation in the cafe is a terrible, terrible piece of acting :D but I liked it overall.

Isn't it Mandarin? That's what they said in an interview the other day anyway o_O I could be wrong. Maybe there's more than one foreign language convo...

What is with all the Keanu bashing??? He is fab :( (I do agree with MentalChik, he is purty ^_^) some of my favourite films of all time are Keanu Reeves films, The Matrix included - note, I'm saying The Matrix, not the Matrix series, but that's the fault of the Wachowski's writing, not Keanu Reeves. Have you lot not seen "Hardball"? I cry every time I watch that when G-Baby dies and K does his speech at the funeral :'(.

I'm really looking forward to this film. I haven't seen the original (would like to, but haven't got time before I go see the new one) and so have no idea what to expect, but there have been so little sci-fi's out lately that I can't wait to finally get to see one again. I'm looking forward to a film that actually redeems 2008 for it's total lack of quality films this year, although saying that, I still want to see The Changeling, so maybe that'll do it.

The original was crap and I can't see this one being much better

The original wasn't total crap, but it was doing that horrible thing of making social comment through movie Sci Fi, and as any fan noes that shit only really works well in written form.

The other thing is that it's hardly a peaceful message - don't make nukes or else we'll wipe your planet out.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was thinking this the other day - what gives them the right to come down and dictate to us about destroying things when that's what they plan to do if we continue? Talk about double standards o_O!

Yes, it was Mandarin. Radio Bejing beams lessons over shortwave. (It's too tonal a language for me to learn successfully, though).

I liked that scene because it used one of the unsung supporting actors that you see in many films, but rarely know their name. I'm pretty sure his name is James Hong, but don't quote me on that. He is always very good, even when they give him crap lines.
