The curious incident of the dog in the night time

personally i don't understand what was so special about the book large parts of it bored me and the idea that people view the world difrently is hardly a revolutionary one ... the few bits i did enjoy were the parts where it was exploring something like perception of events but those moments seames few and far between and squeezed into a constricting and mundane plot

It was very good.
If you consider the fact that the author didn't have any previous knowledge of autism (/aspergers) before he wrote the book (this is what I have been led to believe, anyway) he does extremely well and a lot of it correlated with what I (at the time) was being taught about autism.

And yes, of course it's cliched. Would be a bit boring if he described the experiences of a boy with very mild autism that very rarely became apparent when meeting new people, wouldn't it.
I liked the fact that it was a relatively mundane plot and felt that this worked really well with a (admittedly 'cliched') experience of autism: ordinary events being interpreted in a less than ordinary way because of the asperegers.

Hollis! The ending made me cry, damn it!

I have worked with people with autism, and I have had friends with Aspergers, and I didn't feel the book helped me understand them any better. Probably because this book was written from the understanding of one person, and everyone is different. I don't have some societal idea of the right way to behave.
My then boyfriend had slight Aspergers and at the time, worked with autistic children: he really enjoyed the book and felt that it captured the experience relatively well. I don't necessarily think the authors aim was to try to help the reader understand autism/aspergers, other than in the basic way that he presents it. AFAIK he did all his research for the book from the internet. I think he was just using autistic spectrum disorder as a skeleton to frame a Harry Potter style 'childrens book that adults will enjoy'.
A very enjoyable read IMO. There are other sources available for a more accurate, comprehensive portrayal of the disorder, but if you fancy a light read this is a good one.
