The Cure - crap/not crap

If your gonna worship at the shrine of albums as meaningful musical forms then probably 'Disintegration' is at the top of their oevre. It's well produced, works together as a whole and has hit songs. But.......the cure are a singles band really, some of the best, and the forgotten b-sides are something quite exquisite.

I wouldn't call them crap, but don't find them that compelling either. I guess that makes me a peanut, then.

I think this thread must've cropped up before I got into the Cure, but definitely not crap.

ETA: However, I did recently get hold of The Top, and that certainly is crap.

wonderful, of course. They did some awful songs later on, but a band should be judged on it's best work, and at their best The Cure were just fucking awesome.

Been listening to Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me a lot recently, this song is a total winner. :)

I remember almost killing a car full of people in about 1997 by getting the teacher driving the car to play my tape of Pornography when we were driving up to a science field trip in the north east. They were all in favour of The Cure but they thought - to my relish as The School Goth - that they were going to get The Love Cats and stuff like that. But oh no - The School Goth insisted on the most depressing self-indulgent music on earth. I was deeply embarrassed at how shite it actually was :D

I still love them though.

Loved them long time. They've had their crappy moments, but their early stuff still gets an airing now and then.

The Top is overlooked and a bit patchy but it's not crap - it kind of eased them back into being The Cure again after they'd had a go at being a shiny POP group for a bit

Definitely not crap.

They have produced some excellent material. There may be the odd duff one (far out numbered by the good stuff), but after being around so long and releasing so many albums that's not surprising

ACES , saw them once in '89 at docklands arena and they played everything they have ever done as it was their last night of the world tour, went of for aaaages

Then saw them at the Albert hall , and they played most of their new stuff. Wasn't so good

Mind you, I think the one actual Curehead I knew (with the black clothes and silly hair cut) went on to marry an Italian aristocrat.

So there's that.

Some dodgy stuff along the way for sure as many have said, but overall, magnificent. Not listened to any Cure for a long time, but thanks to this thread I've now got Disintegration on at work, courtesy of youtube. Su-fucking-purb.

I saw them a few times when they were current and they never let me down. I liked how they'd really mine their back catalogue. Around 'Disintegration' time I saw them at Wembley - one of the gigs that was meant to be their last- and they did 'The Holy Hour' off 'Faith' as part of the umpteen encores.

I like bands that do that. You know you're going to get ten minutes of 'A Forest' and 'Boys Don't Cry' when you go to see The Cure but they'd quite often surprise you with something obscure too.

I watched their Reading headline set from a year or so ago when it was on telly and they were fucking brilliant. I thought it would be a bit embarrassing tbh but it was anything but. Not a single new song I don't think, just two hours of total crowd-pleasing. Really wished I'd gone.

I've always admired Robert Smith for opening that album with the line 'It doesn't matter if we all die." I still piss myself whenever I hear that. :D

I love that album but don't listen to it much as it reminds me of one of the cats dying.:(:D
