The cult of Mac

I was once in the amiga cult. I refused to accept the pc could ever be better and was sure that the amgia would conquer the universe. I think the maccers have the same thing i had then.

I don't have time to read the thread now - I'll trawl through it tonight - but I thought I'd say why I prefer using a Mac. Sorry if this has been covered/is clearly off topic.

They're designed for idiots.

Simple as that. They're the Fisher Price toys of the computer world. You don't need to understand loads of baffling configurations and strings and drives and all that malarky. There's nice colours and lovely big buttons to press, and it's all very easy on the brain. Whenever I have to use a PC, it all seems so *technical*, like it's been designed for someone who has an understanding of how computers might work. Macs are super-easy to operate - even easier since OSX introduced the dock, with lots of nice colourful icons for the applications.

That's about it.

Ah, the Amiga!

I fear nostalgia overrides reality for me and as far as I'm concerned they were the bestest computers ever!

Yes, that is the amazing thing about devotion and dogma, I still think that. Every now and again i fire up my old 1200 and it really was miles ahead of it's time, better than macs and pcs of the time for sure !

. Recant sir !

Well, their website's not working, so I can't tell if you're pulling my dual-OS platform.

But, if they do sell powerbooks it's a sure sign that Debenhams is going upmarket. I knew I liked the way they were developing...

;)

Fisher Price is a wrong comparison for me - I always associate the unnecessarily bright colours and distracting eye candy with Fisher Price XP, complete with the annoying kid-like assistants

Apple's latest machines make me more think of B&O style minimalism, right down to the packaging and simplicity. Too much from the pc-side reminds of JVC or Philips stereos from the 80s, all flashing lights, graphic equalizers and other try-too-hard stuff. There are honourable exceptions of course, but there are some howling 'trevor and sharon' style glowing UV cases out there...

I was a ST advocate back then. Faster processor, shiter graphics and sound, but that beautiful midi port made all the difference.

Yes, now i remember, the amiga v st thing was just as much fun then as the pc mac thing is now.

Aye, but I'd concede that the Amiga was almost certainly the better designed platform, with a genuine multi-tasking OS. Only on some games did the greater processor grunt of the ST come to the fore, and they were few and far between.

The irony was, by the virtue of that MIDI port, the ST gained far greater longevity and became more of a industry platform than the Amiga.

Also, my digital watch is much better than yours.

No WAY. My first Ingersoll played 'Yesterday' and could add up before calculator-watches became the fashion

Ok, to play the tune, you had to hold a minuscule little button in until your finger would glow red with numbness, And the tune was shite but - hey - that thing was the bees knees of modern technology back then...

;)

I had an Amiga 1200 and an Atari 1040STE.

Flogged the Amiga within 2 weeks of purchasing it new, and kept the trusty ST1040.

The ST is still going!!

The Amiga was OK but I needed a machine that ran Cubase with none of the bollocks, no extra MIDI interface, no odd sampling software that would crash the machine and not talk to other software... ST fitted the bill for 6 years... then I bought a Mac.

I'll agree with whoever said Macs are for people who don't want to learn code - I certainly don't - I just want it to work, and when it doesn't I don't want "Error Code 9863267634" popping up - I want "Hey dude, try formatting the disc" in plain English.

Which is why I prefer Macs. That and the aesthetics. And the capability to reliably run the high-end ultra-niche software I need it to.

Lighten up people. Nobody is calling you a fool for preferring a PC.
It's what you're used to, and what you prefer, is all.

Well said, but i wearly of 'some' mac owners calling me fool for editing on my pc, thats all.

If I had the cash I would have both and be very happy.

I had a digital watch that claimed to tell the 'World Time'.

All it really had was a crappy LCD display with a load of cities and their time difference around the fascia.

But people were impressed when I'd suddenly intone, "Fuck me! It's 4.32pm in Moscow right now!"

But then it was the early 80s.

Fanboys exist all over the place

Have a look at some camera sites and watch the Canon fanboys fight the Nikon fanboys. People want to think they have the best, and will defend what they have to the limit.

Me,
I went for Nikon - the specs on the Canon were better, but I just didn't like the feel of it in my hand. Did I get the best camera? Yes. I got the best for me.

I had a Windows XP lappy, and previously a Windows 98 desktop. They pissed me off because they didn't do what I wanted adequately, and what with viruses, spyware etc, I got fed up maintaining them. I tried Linux, but didn't find them easy enough to use. I switched to macs. Was it the right choice? Yes - for me. I was willing to spend extra on the PowerBook, took the gamble and it paid off for me. What I have is ideal (for the moment) for me.

Would I recommend people consider macs if buying a computer? Yes.

Does that make me a fanboy? No (although some people seem to think that it does) I just think that people should be presented with the options. It worked for me, and it may be right for others, and shouldn't be dismssed out of hand.

Thing is, I don't really have any allegiance to any particular brand: I judge them on their current product (while taking their reputation for reliability into account).

I loved Olympus 35mm cameras, but were happy to switch to Fujifilm and then Sony when I went digital.

And then I've had a Konica camera, another Fuji, a Nikon and I'll probably end up buying my first Ricoh camera soon.

My office hi-fi is by Pure Digital and my latest PC is by (...goes to check name on front...) Mesh.

The only cult I'm part of is the one that means I get the best product avaiable at the time within my budget, regardless of any notion of 'brand loyalty.'

i went to a local mac user group, when i bought my first mac a couple of years ago. bit of a mistake that.
they were all mental.

having said that, most of the folk in my department at work, constantly drone on about how fast their pc is, who's machine has the highest fps, which machine has the best built in fishtank etc.

i use my mac because i like the OS and for most of the stuff i do, i find it easier to work with. If Vista is easier for me, i'll move to that.

but, i also use a pc because i used to be a design engineer, and all my CAD software is PC only. its a decent machine, and i thought it would be pointless spending thousands trying to find mac alternatives (if solidworks is ever released for mac).
only problems i've had with xp, have generally been when i've been pissing about with it(trying to get my archaic tv card to work).

i'll work with whatever is easiest for me, and at the end of the day, its pointless getting worked up about it, it's just a box with fucking bits in it.

That is a bit sad... I work in perhaps the geekiest part of my company and our main concern of new hardware is how fast it is because a nice fast machine will let us compile stuff faster. And this gets us to the pub faster.
