At the other end is Johnny Cash - a score of ten, and representing your view that country music is the greatest music of all. You may not like ALL of it, but pretty near. You love it more than anything..

Between are scores 2-9. So, simply place a vote somewhere between 1-10 to best represent when you fit on this spectrum..

arsebuscuits I voted ten, I love good country, but its not my favourite genre, but then again I don't have a 'favourite genre'.... just favourite bands/singers...

if you want music to get you through some very dark times in your life, then country is one of the genres in which you'll find that music...

Gram Parsons got me through my father's death, and a trying to do right but turned back in my face savage, nasty breakup

I love Rock n Roll mostly, from early blues through the 50s explosion through 60s rockers, through punk etc...

The country I like tends to be mostly rockabillyish, Cash and so forth

I've never been a huge country fan, but I've never hated all of it either. There's always been some country music I have loved.

I vote 11 as there's stuff I like a lot better than Cash.
Tbh I think he's getting overplayed and overexposed and if I had to give away my box set of Cash or Bob Wills the choice would be a very very easy one. And god forbid if some twat ever nicks my Lefty Frizzell double CD.

Plenty of gold - cash, bluegrass, bobby gentry(does she count?) , rock-a-billy.

Even people who you might consider to be on the the 'rhinestone offender' list like wilie nelson, dolly parton and Kris Kristopherson have written some top songs.

However theres plenty of reactionary, souless, maudlin, turgid, braindead arse as well.

I give it 6.5.

Does skiffle count btw?

at one end is Billie Ray 'Wanker Wanker Wanker' Cyrus - everything that is crass and sick about modern country. He's a score of 1 and you'd vote for him if you hate everything about country, have never heard a country record you like, think it's all shit and would rather eat your own sick than listen to it.
.

Not strictly a fair representative of shite country music. The title track of this Billy Ray Cyrus album for example, is a pretty damn fine country bluegrass song and performance in anybody's book. I've seen him interviewed on TV, and he actually comes across as quite a nice chap, and I get the feeling that he regards the phenomenal success of Achy Breaky as both a blessing and a curse on his career.

So I think he merits a 3.5 on the scale, rather than a 1.

By the way, off topic - every country music fan MUST see the Dixie Chicks' film "Shut Up & Sing" - fantastic mix of music and politics.

the options weren't entirely serious - Cash isn't my favourite country star, Cyrus my most hated. It was for shits'n'giggles.

Woody Guthrie is probably one of my top ten artists of the century, and I like Cash... Plus scene is from Deliverence is brilliant, so 10. I'd give it 8 or 9 usually, but I was feeling nice.

Arse to nice. Country is about outlaws and fuckups.

So he should, cos he's going straight to hell for it.

and lest we forget the amazing 'I've spent 6 months on the road playing gigs living on speed, booze and downers' and now I'm cutting my new album' almost psychedelic orchestral backdrops of lee hazelwood et al in the 50s

I fucking love JC, and was brought up on a lot of country music, besides other quality stuff. Love all the variations under its umbrella, but would happily shoot billy ray cuntrus in the face. Over and over

I've been listening to loads of country the last 6 months or so. I wouldn't say its my favorite genre ever (no idea what is tbh  ), but it is fucking great all the same. Its a pretty vast genre though, I'm still just touching the surface really.
