The coolest record in your parents collection?

My dad's got loads and loads of jazz 78s. Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Dizzy, Stan Getz, Dave Brubeck etc

They're pretty cool. I don't know if I could just choose one.

My mum and dad were too poor or too tight to spend much on music. My dad used to record the top 40 nearly every sunday on a huge tape recorder...huge big spools of tape spinning round and he used to swear when Alan Freeman broke in too early on the songs.

They then used to play the tapes at some wicked parties they had (we were banished to the bedroom but could hear stuff going on) all accompanied by beer from party 7's.

Dunno if any of that was cool.

My dad did that too :)

he binned the reel to reel recorder eventually ... and I rescued it ;)

It's only a 3 3/4 ips mono 4 track ... I've ummed and ahhd occasionally about trying to convert it to stereo so I could transcribe old tapes, but the work involved .... plus the fact I don't have any stereo tapes ... didn't bother.

The main drive belt broke and it was impossible to source another one. He replaced it with a large O-ring from a gas turbine :D

More info ... he tells me he bought it in the mid-Sixties for a tenner (still a lot of money in them days, but a new one was well over a hundred quid ...) from a market. The guy he bought it from said it wouldn't play tapes properly. He took it home, cleaned the heads and the tape transport, and it worked perfectly after that :D All it needed was cleaning! It was only about 5 years old at the time ...

Heh, my mum and dad must have had the same attitude to music as me then. Fuck the bills, I've got to have that 78! I've never spoken to them about it actually. Perhaps I should. Maybe they only had money before me and me brother were born, cos I don't remember them buying much when I was growing up.

Wish i'd have rescued the radiogram me mum and dad used to have. That's the thing I listened to all that brilliant stuff on when I was a kid. Heh - even then, I used to put me ear right up to the speaker cos it wasn't loud enough :D
