The Cleansing of Hackney

Divisive Cotton said:
Nope - a city of the rich for the rich - but where are all the cleaners, nannies, taxi drivers, shop workers, prostitutes and all the other people who service the rich going to live?

In Islington the majority of people live in "Social Housing" the people being forced out of London are not always those on the lowest incomes but those on Middle incomes.
Friends of mine who grew up in Hackney have moved out to places like Hoddesdon cos they couldnt get anywhere cheap enough in Hackney and they are the ones who have done well in life.

I doubt if Hoddesdon is any cheaper than Hackney. Its a popular commuter town after all.

Before long anyone who doesn't earn a certain wage or work in a certain sector isn't going to be able/permitted to live in London. Or is it me being paranoid?

In that case who is going to work on the buses, man the hospitals or clean the streets.? They wont be able to move within commuter distance of London as the housing prices probably wont be any cheaper than London plus the fact that they need to buy a train season ticket.

very good article, some nasty stuff going on in hackney at the moment :(

Yes there is nasty stuff going on in Hackney. Arthur Shuter, leader of the 34 Broadway occupation, has announced that he will be supporting Tory and Lib Dem candidates in the forthcoming local elections in Hackney.

BarryB

yeah, and how you can stay in a nasty party which is about to cut disability benefits by over 30 quid, (the last time that happened with R/McDonald the LP split in two) is also baffling and disturbing.

So do you think Shuter is right to support the Tories and Lib Dems?

what they are doing to education in hackney is disgusting too. i'm in the hands off hackney schools campaign and the hands off haggerston school campaign (which works within the hackney wide camapign). i won't go into the details but 5 academies, attacking schools, pupils striking/marching/walking out, teachers organising etc etc. is the shortest summin g up i can do.

The average price for a flat between 2000 and 2006
Hoddesdon £166,000
Stoke Newington £213,000

People are being forced to move by the rising prices.
The huge influx of White Middle Class people in Hackney and Stoke Newington is forcing more and more local people out.

One of the worst things about Hackney for a long time has been education.
Lazy teachers with there low expectations, were always part of that. One of my boys goes to Mossbourne now which is great.

Hackney has had so many kids for years who were not educated in the borough. In my experience the Middle Class White Incomers often say proudly how they send their kids to the local school but spend loads on private tutors and/or when their kids 11 try to get them a School anywhere but Hackney.

the teachers aren't lazy, they work there arses off and are the only good things about hackney schools.
Mossboure is NOT great. only 1 child from the pembury estate right next to it got in, they have weekend trips for £500 and £12 a head cheese and wine nights which discriminate from against workin class kids, it is selective to an extent, there has been extreme bullying too which has resulted in parents having to take there kids out of the school for safety reasons.

A lot of the teachers are real twats, thats why over 50% of kids go to schools in other boroughs when they get to the age of 11.
In my sons class the vast majority of kids are local.I dont know anything about bullying at the School i will ask him tommorow morning..
( When he gets back from spending all that money he keeps finding on his way back from School.)
Never heard anything about a £500 weekend trip or £12 a head cheese and wine nights?

thats not true about the teachers, i'm friends with many teachers in hackney, particularly the south of the borough and they care fuck loads about the kids they teach.
we've had contact with quite a few parents at mossboure who've exprirenced a lot of extreme bullying.
and the trips and cheese and wine nights are wot we've heard from them and the NUT in hackney. like, i said, only 1 kid fromt he pembury estate got in and its on the dorrstep of the school.

Stoke Newington is part of Hackney. Do you have the figures for Hackney as a whole? And for all residential properties not just flats.

How are people being "forced to move" exactly? Who is forcing them? And how?

Giles..

The huge influx of affluent White Settlers has pushed up prices and forced people out to places like Edmonton and Cheshunt which have more affordable properties.

Try and sort this out for you later Barry in a hurry now.

Surely what you mean is "house owners have been delighted to sell their houses for far more than they paid for them, so they could move to a nicer area".

No-one is making them sell up, to "White Settlers" (who is this new tribe?) or to anybody else.

And if you used the language that you are using to describe any other ethnic or social group, it wouldn't sound good, would it?

Giles..

2000 - 2006 Price averages.
Flats Hackney £187,926 Hoddesdon £116,669
Terrace Houses Hackney £282,325 Hoddesdon £170,298
Semi Detached Hackney £368,008 Hoddesdon £194,402
Detached Hackney £407,982 Hoddesdon £315,526

Hope this helps you realise the impact White Incomers are having in Hackney...

The people being forced to move are not those with Houses already but those who grew up in the area and want to buy a home but cant due to the way prices have risen in Hackney.

Well if these people are moving to Hackney it proves that Hackney is not the dump that some people say it is.

But why are they moving there? It doesn't have any decent schools, or any youth clubs, or much in the way of leisure facilities - come to that, the transport links are quite bad which is why they are going to build a new train link. So why do they move there? In one word - property, and the financial return that can be made from it.

Im not sure if Hackney teachers will agree that arent any decent schools. True the East London Line is coming to Hackney but to say that transport links are quite bad is rather overstating the case. The number of buses in Hackney is huge and there are of course several railway lines services where the services have been increased recently. However these services still need improving which hopefully they will when TFL take over Silverlinks North London services and hopefully the One services. Perhaps you could tell us what you think should be done to improve Hackneys transport services?

Some people like to live in Hackney which may come as a surprise to some people on Urban75. As for people coming to live here because of the property prices thats not exactly new.

BNW does this every few days or so, turns up, points fingers at people and invariably labels them a hippy, peppered with a few 'cunts' 'twats', etc for good measure. It wouldn't be quite so sad, and may even be funny, even he didn't sincerely consider himself to be one of, if not the most, intelligent person on the planet. Unfortunatelty he's just scraping the barrel of his own heavily reduntant, and poorly exercised, brain all the time.
