The Cleaning Thread

Always available in Wilkos up here. I like it but I use it sparingly cos I have my natural mixtures to use up. You can get it in Home Bargains too with Starclens and all those other product they do but I'm not interested in those. The Stardrops bottle design is much

Ooo are you still getting them in the glass bottles? They were lovely. All the Stardrops I've seen recently has been in tacky plastic bottles.

No I've been getting them in the plastic bottle. I agree about the plastic but I like the overall shape and the label design. I'm off to Home Bargains tomorrow so I'll have a look cos I thought I saw some glass bottles there.

A small bowl of vinegar and water put on full power in the microwave will soak up nasty kitchen smells. I've tried this after cooking fish and it really works.

I don't understand - do you open the door of the microwave afterwards and then it sucks in all the smell or does that happen while it's being heated w the door shut?

This thread is freaking me out.

We have to take it in turns to do the cleaning, I just get some cif and nuke everything. I've got no time for all that half a lemon stuff - bring me the chemicals!. I've learnt to stay away from bleach though after a few accidents.

This thread is freaking me out.

It neutramalises the odours through the microwave vents - the ones at the back which keep air circulating through the oven - the ones you aren't supposed to block.

I have now purchased a bottle of Stardrops. It's concentrated - is it always? That was the only choice available.

Later I shall use it on my kitchen floor.

OOooo I might get some Stardrops if I can find it. Appeals to me. Let us know how it goes missfran!

I'm not big on the whole cleaning thing, I do as little as possible to keep it tidy n clean. Bollox to skirting boards and tops of doors etc. I'm not much of a domesticated animal :o So much more to do in life than.....clean. ALthough I understand those who actually like it. My mother is one, she loves it. Her house is like a show house. Heh.

I mainly use natural stuff like some others. Hate chemical shit. Bad for the environment n bad for yooo.
When I get a cleaner (yes I SO am treating myself again! They're fabulous!) they will use the natural stuff too.

No, not usually concentrated but I'm sure it will be just as good and maybe even cheaper:)

My top tip for happy cleaning: do it in your underwear. That way you avoid getting crap all over your clothes, and you jazz up your cleaning with a Carry On-style cheap thrill :)

Ooo May you've snuck in and put up a webcam at Chez Mogden. I didn't wear a stitch all day save for my Nigella apron and I was doing housework and cleaning all day and well into the evening. Too hot for proper clothes and I did have a couple of Carry On moments :o :D

Tip: Buy new things.

Went to ikea, got things for kitchen. I now have to clear on top of the kitchen cupboards for an array of jars... hmm.

Just thought I'd bump this thread to recommend mambo music as excellent cleaning accompaniment. Its cheery rhythms and sunshine sound make great motivators, especially in this shit bleak dingy weather.

I prefer my Musicals Greatest Hits. Belt out "Big Spender" and "Caberet" while doing the washing up. :D

Ok- Big bump to this thread :hmm:

We have a goose feather duvet that needs washing, Ive tried giving it an airing but that wasnt enough.

The label says professional cleaning only. There is a dry cleaners in town, but I understand the cleaning chemicals would be toxic on a duvet, in any case they charge £17 for washing duvets. Debenhams are having a sale and I can get a new one for just £30 more!

My nearest launderette is miles away.

Ive looked it up and most advice says dont wash a feather duvet at home, because its difficult to dry properly and to re-distribute the feathers.
But others say on a gentle wash and slow dry, it should be ok.

Can I just stick it in my machine?

Godammit, you raised my hopes.

I also hate cleaning, but I also have a boyfriend who sleeps with my frickin duvet folded between his crotch.

How did I miss this thread? Its so cool!! :)

I nearly forgot my Number One Most Important Cleaning Tip Of All Time:

Have a pint beforehand. Just the one, you don't want to get sloppy, but you'd be amazed how much you can really get into cleaning while one pint in with some good music on.

And then have another pint afterwards. You deserve it :D

Word! Thats a good one.

If you wait until stuff is really dirty, it's much more satisfying when you eventually get around to cleaning it.

If your shower curtain goes all mouldy, instead of washing it, just buy a new one. The Tesco Value ones are only 97p.

Non-stick scouring pads seem to clean my enamel bath OK.

Great advice. Cleaning shower curtains is poitless when they're so cheap to buy.

Not sure if it has already been mentioned but for cleaning microwaves. A couple of slices of lemon in cold water zapped in it for 2mins should have it fresh as dawn.

how big is the duvet? a single is ok on a gentle wash because there is a bit of space. a double goes lumpy and takes ages to dry. even a single one isnt as good once its been home washed . if febreeze doesnt work, or bicarb of soda sprinkled on overnight then hoovered up , then its time for a new one. maybe buy a duvet protector too, to prevent groin smells penetrating the new duvet :)

People, people, please FOCUS...

Its the goose feather duvet we want to clean now...

*begs*

E2a, Feyr has answered! hurrah!

Its a king, but its a thin summer duvet, it does fit inside the machine.

Febreeze smells awful, and will bicarb will cope against sweaty crotch?!

Im off to investigate this duvet protector of which you speak!

Thanks :)

I recently washed my dry-clean only double duvet (10.5 tog) but it's manmade fibre not feathers so I don't suppose that helps much. It dried OK and not lumpy after a few shakes. First wash in 10 years ... oh the shame!

bicarb should neutralise most smells, maybe do an application on both sides over a few days. these are the protectors i mean http://www.gouldsonline.co.uk/products/anti-allergy-duvet-protector/54/ they are designed for allergies but i found the keep smells out quite well too, mr fery has really really cheesey feet that make the duvet smell. manmade fibere duvets are much easier to wash at home than feather ones, as they tend to bounce back a bit more

tbh, if bicarb desnt work or sounds like to much effort, i would be tempted to wash it on a gentle wash, using napisan because it gets rid of more germs/bacteria at lower temps i think. do you have a tumble dryer? if so dry it on low for a long time, with dryer balls or tennis balls in to fluff it up and stop as many lumps, then give it a good shake. worse case it comes out a bit rubbish, then buy a new one :)
