The CLASSIC Doctor Who thread

Best ones Ive seen (as an adult)

Spearhead from Space
Terror of the Autons - 1st appearnece of the master!
Day of the Daleks
Genesis of the Daleks

Loved as a kid but could actually be shit-

The Deamons
The green death
The Sea Devils
Frontier in Space
Planet of the Daleks
Seeds of death (if thats the one with the bloke who turns into a massive evil plant)
Pyramids of Mars
The Sunmakers

Saw Inferno as an adult - its utter bobbins and interminably long.

I've been going through the Baker (Tom, obv.) episodes with my stepson and The Sunmakers is actually not too bad. Quite humorous in spots. Some of them aren't half as frightening as I remember them though. I thought Horror of Fang Rock was terrifying as a kid.

they do do occasional boxsets of related stories, but with over 100 stories to release, each running to a couple of hours on average, not to mention all the extras included on each disc, i don't think a box set is particularly feasible.

the trial of a timelord boxset is wirth the money iirc. At equivalent to 50 green ones it is a bit expensive

A average hour of television takes about 2 gig. If a DVD can hold 9 gig then you could have 2-3 eps per DVD. A box set of six could hold 12-24 eps. You could do it in a series of sets, including bonus material.

they make more money doing it like this though, and i think you'd be surprised how much expense goes into the extras and making the products. i'm sure if they thought they could make it profitable to release it all as big box sets, they would.

I got mine for £3 and I am still not entirey sure it was worth it. Maybe for the Docs it's ok. I never managed to get past the first episode of the last adventure. Fuckin' langford.

At a list price of $75 for Season 5, you'd think they had enough money by now.

I suspect they're waiting until Blueray becomes the standard, then they'll tap that source of revenue again.

season five? are you talking old season 5 or new season 5?

I own three classic dvd ' s, remembrance & destiny of the daleks, and the five doctors, I wasn't to sure about watching them as I watched a blakes 7 episode and it was a mistake.
However they were o.k. and my grandson loves remembrance so when second hand opportunity strikes I will buy some more.
oh and does the film count as classic , it was sadly not good.

get genesis of the daleks, robots of death and pyramids of mars. all cracking tom baker episodes and great fun as well as scary!

I'd forgotten about destiny , tom baker agonizing over wether he had the moral right to destroy the daleks has stayed vividly with me since I saw it as a child.

ah yes, the doctor does agonise so over wether he should commit genocide- but then does it EVERY FUCKIN TIME. Vervoids, Nesteen, Silurian and so on. He is a menace.

Rememberance is good man. Where I first fell in love with Ace and her baseball bat of doom

I know many would claim there is no such thing, but can anyone recommend any good McCoy episodes, they are for my grandson.

greatest show in the galaxy is great, as is the curse of fenric. remembrance of the daleks is a solid episode too.

Thanks will check out the first two as I already have the dalek one, it reminded me that McCoy was an enjoyable doctor to watch.

He was good, Ace was good. Unfortunately the writing of the time was abhorrent and the budget was 98p an episode. :(

Seeds of death (if thats the one with the bloke who turns into a massive evil plant)

Not only that but its got the bloke who played Boycie in only fools and horses in it. And some great madman with a synth playing weird music to plants action. Overall though it wasnt a top classic and I dont think I liked the pacing.

Anyway I think people have already mentioned the true classics of that era so I will just focus on one other one you mention...

The Sun makers. Is there a more politically charged Dr Who story than this one? I could hardly believe it when I stumbled on it a few years back. OK its a Metropolis knockoff, and the political message is conflicted in some ways, but it was still amusing to watch.

"An ongoing insurrectionary situation would not be acceptable to my management."

I seem to recall that a few of the other stories from the Baker era give hints that they were written during an oil crisis, but I forget which ones precisely.

And now a favourite comedy moment of mine, a wonderful scene from The Creature From The Pit

hapiness patrol is pretty good, a kind of weird punky dystopian world of enforced hapiness. TARDIS gets a pink paintjob

Eep. Is that the one with bertie basset?

I liked rewatching the dalek one (which I didn't really like at the time) enough to be willing to check out some more, I think I had pretty much given up on who by the time of McCoy. Haven't actually followed though on that though. The only other one I have is Ghost Light which I recommend nobody ever watches.
