True - I'd say the Sex Pistols were the worst of the three going on music alone, and since I was four years old when they played their last gig, I haven't got much else to go on.

I remember The Clash demonstrating outside the NF HQ in the late 70's. What did the Pistols do to compare like?
With respect no-one else outside the demonstrative scene will remember that, whereas the Bill Grundy moment and "God Save The Queen" are landmarks in our music history for both the punks and the mainstream.

"demonstrative scene"? Fighting fascism was no "scene". You were at risk of being stabbed for one thing.

The Clash at Victoria Park. Not a bad audience (I was somewhere amongst it).

Arn't you the son of a high court judge from notting hill?

1) Get your facts straight. Joe Strummer's dad was a diplomat.

2) What the fuck has that got to do with anything?

1, whatever, he was a posh lord.

2, correct, it didn't stop them being total shit.

Agreed, anti-facism isn't a scene, but my generation, born as we were in the 80s, won't for the most part be aware of the Clash playing those gigs, whereas the Pistols are recalled more often for the 3 chief things of Bill Grundy, "God Save The Queen" and having the word "bollocks" in their album title. It may have only been for show and I'm not belittling whatever the Clash did but I simply say they aren't as clearly remembered by the population at large as the Pistols.

You are obviously a man of no taste whatever and your opinions are therefore totally worthless.

Debatable, as if you recall The Clash made it big in the US (one of the few bands who did from that period).

He already had the money.

He could have done fuck all then , instead he spread a word, politices some youths , got me involved in the ANL, played RAR, introduced a lot of people to reggae via their music, publicised the Sandinista.

So what does it matter what job you dad did. You have no control over that it's what you do with your own life that counts.

I wish he haddn't rotted my ears with his awful music.

all three were great bands but the Pistols were the best of them in terms of the
" FUCK YOU " value that we desperately needed in 76/77, maybe right time right place but they changed things dramatically unlike the other two.
No one single album has ever made such an impact on music , you may not have liked the change of course but hey " FUCK YOU ! "

Tres tres punk

Oh for fucks sake, I'm not talking about the Clash's success. I was simply saying that the gigs referenced by someone earlier in the thread are not anywhere near as well known by the population of the UK as the Sex Pistols' appearence on Grundy. Surely that can't be argued, however important the two events were from a literal point of view.

Success involves consistency over a time period and getting your name known, selling lots of single and albums bought by lots of people which results in your band name going up the charts and being constantly talked about in the press.

The Sex Pistols appearance on the Bill Grundy programme was certainly a defining moment in musical history and will be remembered by many (particularly those who share an interest in these events), but I'm not convinced with regards to the "population at large" bit.

Anyway, most of the "population at large" then and now have no interest in that particular musical genre.

Either way, they were front page news whereas the Clash I don't think ever were. It should be noted that this all happened about 5 years before I was born so I'm basing my assessments on modern day remeniscence.

I just want to keep this thread running with another vote for the clash being twats.

Strangely I was a big - big audio dynamite fan once.

I have two hats and some t-shirts.

I also have thier entire back catalogue from the begining up until the end of the second album. That might not sound like a lot but I have all the limited stuff and all the US singles too, plus they did a million remixes in other countries.

I also have all their fan magazines. They were supposed to come out four times a year but I think it took them two years to get the first years output out (if that makes any sence).
