The case against Coldplay

The difference is that I didn't try to claim that having "musical interest" implies that it is "better" and that people should only listen to Nocturnes as a consquence. Do you see that difference? The point is that music doesn't come down to some academic or critical appraisal of its musical worth, it only comes down to whether it resonantes with you on an emotional level.

and the fact that Pearl Jam resonate with you on an emotional level means you're arrested in your mid-teens emotionally.

< :p >

I'll be really generous and allow the others as having good stuff on them but Pablo Honey! Have a word, that's an appalling record, at least as bad as 'Parachutes'

Discussing whether an album is good or not is as frustrating as discussing politics, but IMO IMO IMO Pablo Honey is great - it took a few listens but one day it just clicked, lots of good tunes (and 'Creep' was a great tune before it got played it to death)

You, stop whispering, thinking about you, anyone can play guitar, prove yourself, I can't, lurgee, blow out

Radiohead before they found their feet, but still enjoable, and you can recognise what's to come...

Let's see if we can all elevate ourselves higher than the next person, using nothing but bluff and gusto, until we reach a new musical zenith at the feet of the Gods.

...but seriously, Coldplay really are a music-by-numbers coffee table pop act....dinner party music for nice people who say things like 'chart music is just rubbish, that's why we prefer something a bit deeper, like coldplay...'

yuck, fuck, muck and golloshers!

They had a song in the early days called See You Soon which was really good. I think it was on an EP or a b-side or something.

I used to go and see Radiohead in the times before they'd released Pablo Honey, and I was really looking forward to it, and was seriously dissapointed by it when it was released... but they have always been a fantastic live act, and their potential was so visible right the way back then. Johnny Greenwood was electric...I remember thinking 'this guy is gonna be big!'.

coldplay has chris martin in it

Thats reason enough to hate them

I'm pretty much think that music is a personal choice and there is no right or wrong.

However when people judge music not on the music but on personalities it winds me up. People stating categorically that so and so band are the best band in the world ever because they fancy the lead singer. Just as bad is people saying so and so's music is shit because i don't like the lead singer, he's a wanker.

You aren't music fans at all. You are celeb culture victims basing your likes and dislikes on the celebrities themselves rather than ignoring them and listening to the music without bias.

U2
Coldplay
Blur
Prince

All fronted by twats imo opinion. But it hasn't stopped me from liking some of their music and disliking some too.

You're BRILLIANT :)

I agree with Gromit. However, that doesn't stop me from finding "imo opinion" very :D

What's wrong with Blur? I didn't know it wasn't cool to like them :p

I saw Prince live in nineteenninetysomething and it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to, being right at front helped :D

But I only really like two of his albums...

And U2 featured a lot in my record collection as a teenager/young adult.

I've no idea what the point of this post is though... :(

I loathe Damien Allbran. He is soo right on it gets my goat. When Oasis were slagging him off reporters were doing their best to get him to say one single solitary negative thing about them but he kept giving those picture perfect media trained answers. Be a human ffs.

Yet I can't help but like his music. Both Blur and Gorrillaz.

My team is better than your team
No, my team is better than your team
You cunt
No, you're a cunt
No, you're a cunt
No, you're a cunt
Well you're a cunt and I'm harder than you
No, I'm harder than you and so is my team
No, I'm harder than you and so is my wife

I like Damien, although, having said that, I never met him... :p

I always thought tosspost from Oasis was annoying though. But, still, I sang along to the songs :D

I haven't claimed any of that, though. I've made a couple of jokey posts on a repeated-ad-infinitum thread, and maybe said I personally don't like a band. I'm reasonably sure I didn't offer any personal judgements until someone started telling people how to behave ("wind your necks in")... Now, if someone had said "everyone who likes Coldplay is a wanker who should die horribly", I'd understand why people might be upset - that wouldn't be nice. But I don't think that, at all, nor do I think anyone's suggested anything like that on this thread.

I think Coldplay are dull, and rather boring. Them. Not you, because you like them. Just them and their songs. That's all. No connection to judgement on fans intended, just an opinion on some music.

And there's no reason whatsoever why that opinion should affect any fan's ability to continue enjoying what they like, is there? At least, I can't see one.

U2, coldplay and prince are all fronted by twats an imho are all shit....

Blur is fronted by a twat, but i quite like them

It was a throwaway comment...... I dont like coldplay except one song...... i think chris martin is a bit of a nobber.....

Im not going to start on people thinking their musical taste is superior to anyone elses..... its a ridiculous notion....

and if you all carry on arguing i will post cat pictures until you stop

precisely. there's a difference between slagging off (or praising) music and judging the people who like it. A distinction lost on a lot of people on here...

I'm not sure why *you* are taking it so personally though. I never mentioned your name or anything. In fact, if you're saying that my comments don't apply to what you said, why are you getting upset at all? If the shoe doesn't fit then just assume that I'm not talking about you.

i think it's just because I think you're a cock :)

Well, forgive me for trying to bring the discussion to a more reasonable place. Are you saying your "moron" comment wasn't directed at me, because it sure looks that way? :D

Look, you've been just as much of a sneering, arrogant cock on this thread as you've been accusing others of being. Not covering yourself in glory here pal, however it may look from inside your head...

It's high praise to be thought of as a cock by you, El Jefe. Some of my favourite people are thought of as cocks by you. It's like a seal of approval.

Now, are you saying that you don't have any judgement whatsoever about people that like Coldplay? None of you do? You don't have any kind of stereotype in your head? You don't think that they are "nice people who say things like 'chart music is just rubbish, that's why we prefer something a bit deeper, like coldplay"? You don't think of them as middle-class dinner party kind of people?

Good for you. I don't believe a word of it though.

Well you HAD just chosen to call me a hypocrite, you know. It didn't come out of the blue.

Sorry to piss on your fireworks, and I can only speak for myself, but no - I don't. Lots of my friends like Coldplay, I actually quite like Yellow myself. My partner likes a song by Jet. One of my best mates loves Oasis. Almost everyone I know adores the Beatles, and none fit any pat stereotype. Go figure...

I'm passionate about my opinions but not to the point that it leads me to judge other people. Sorry and all, but you'll have to find a new stick to beat me with..
