The case against Coldplay

Their music is not worth comment. However look up 'Coleplay mango trees' to get an idea of their hypocritical greenwash.

They got their fans to spend £18 on a bleached cardboard tube of which the proceeds was spent on an ill conceived project planting mango trees to create a 'Coldplay forest'. This 'forest' never was and just about every tree is now dead.

Meanwhile Chris Martin, our concerned environmentalist, travels to his gigs and back on a private jet

just looked it up

complete fail:rolleyes:

The kabbess was a schoolfriend of Johnny Buckland, the guitarist. So I feel an odd loyalty towards them.

I rather liked Parachutes, as it happened. Not my favourite album in the world, but it has some songs that often suit a mood. Sue me.

Unless you people are spending your days listening to Beethoven, Rachmaninov and Borodin, I think you might want to wind your necks in just a tad about the value of your own musical convictions and tastes. Girls Aloud is not the height of musical sophistication, you know.

Mind you, isn't there something rather reverse-snobbish about that statement? Radiohead were also middle class boys from middle England, but at least their music is interesting :)

Bothered, much?

"my subjectivity appeals to a higher sensibility than your subjectivity, so ner ner ner-ner ner"

Im pretty sure no-one claimed girls aloud where the height of musical sophistication......

Exactly the same could be said about coldplay...... they are simply pop music, they have one song i like.... I think chris martin is a muppet..... job done.

Isn't this kind of the point? You people want to have a go at Coldplay precisely because this is exactly how you feel. You think that you're soooo superior to anything like that.

Well now, I'm pointing out that you're being ridiculous. Ridiculous not least of which because you're building on a house of sand in the first place -- there's more of musical interest in a single Chopin Nocturne than in the entire back catalogue of any currently trendy music for the concentration-deficient generation. So give it a rest and just let people enjoy what they enjoy, because you don't have a leg to stand on.

Telling others how they feel and why? Check.
Superiority? Check.
Utter fucking hypocrite? Check check check.

You should try reading your fucking posts sometime, pal. :D

What are you talking about? I'm the one saying NOT to judge other people's musical tastes, you moron.

you can't see the mote in your own eye, you daft cunt.

So let me get this straight. You want the ability to look down your noses at something without anybody calling you on it, is that right?

:hmm:
it's a function, or perhaps side effect, of critically appraising what is set before you rather than just mindlessly accepting it without question. To take your first point, if you like something fine, if you don't you should just keep that to yourself and shut the fuck up? - is that what you're suggesting.
Sneering is unpleasant but it can be fun, and everyone thinks they have better taste than other people because it's subjective and, hopefully, finely tuned to their own likes and dislikes.
It's an unrelated point really but some people do have better brains or ears, a moments contemplation will show you that's true. Neither means thay'll have better taste in music though.

only for the sneerer tbf.

and sneering does put less confident people off posting what they think about some music. but that's probably half the 'fun' isn't it....

and i dont agree everyone thinks they have better taste in music than other people. i certainly don't. :D

and yet to prove that point, you decided to pull rank about the relative merits of Chopin and pop music.

You're a fucking joke :D

Damn right. The best way to show somebody how small-minded they are being in their judgements of others is to point out how small-minded others could equally be about them.

I'm not doing the sneering here. I'm saying enjoy it if you enjoy it without worrying about whether it passes the "critically appraising what is set before you" test referred to in the quote above. I just hate fucking Captain Mainwarings who think that because they know a little bit about something, it gives them the universal right to look down on those who know a little bit less.

tbf, you did that posing your examples as a superior type of music.

this bit.

Such blind arrogance... It's "looking down noses" when someone else does it, but when you do exactly the same thing, it's perfectly ok? Why's that, then, kabbes?

I'm going to state my opinion on things like music and art, and not be all that fussed if you're offended by it - it wasn't about you, after all, just a band - and there's nothing much you can do about it.

Why you're so offended, I can't fathom. Feel free to slag off something I like if it'll make you feel better... :)

I think both bands are boring and Coldplay slightly more boring the Radiohead which is massively boring so the boring differential is negated by the huge boringness of of boring bands making it hard to find one boring band more boring than the other boring band

anyway, i prefer Radiohead - what i know of 'em.

i can't stand Coldplay's sound - although i did like the nonsensical Yellow when it first came out.

The difference is that I didn't try to claim that having "musical interest" implies that it is "better" and that people should only listen to Nocturnes as a consquence. Do you see that difference? The point is that music doesn't come down to some academic or critical appraisal of its musical worth, it only comes down to whether it resonantes with you on an emotional level.

Kabbes is clearly in denial about his love of Coldplay and so has to hide it behind a contrived position based on his 'appreciation' of classical music.
