The Carling Cup: does anyone give a feck?

i dont see why it should be got rid of either.

lets face it, its only devalued as the 'bigger' clubs dont see it as an important trophy anymore. (whatever the sponsor its still the league cup) you get more revenue from finishing 20th in the premier league than you do for winning the FA Cup for god sakes, they're not really going to get excited about winning a trophy with even less revenue attached.

but its still an opportunity for other 'smaller' clubs to play against the bigger one, and possibly win something. much as i might ridicule it, i'd love it if my club won it - i'd love it if my club won anything, that's part of what football's about after all!

Alright, i'm wrong. And I mispelt won as one in my original post too.

I'm off to bed!

:D

Mind you, the fact that Leicester won it 3 times in the years preceding that is pretty cool. :) So you were partly right.

I've noted a trend towards the big 4 winning even this trophy in recent years though. I think it's because now, even their reserves are better than most other teams...

When your club very rarely gets anywhere near the silverware especially the really good silverware then you I take the Carling Cup. As has already been said another chance for a cheeky trip into Europe and something to celebrate so yup I think it's still important.

I agree, I'd snap your hand off for a carling cup win personally as a West Ham fan. It's a trophy, for heaven's sake, and I don't get why more of the middling teams, with zero chance of winning the league, and not in much danger of relegation, don't take FA cup and league cup more seriously.

surely that's the cup you dont give a fuck about until you actually win it :D

No, it's the cup you don't give a fuck about until you get drawn against the forces of all evil from across town in the area final, play them in two sold out games and beat them, prompting immediate denial that they ever cared about beating us anyway, even though it meant missing out on half a million quid, a trip to to the Millenium Stadium and piss taking at school/work for years afterwards.

:D

It's been devalued to the point of oblivion with endless corporate renamings - the Milk Cup, Littlewoods Challenge Cup, Rumbelows Cup, Coca-Cola Cup, Worthington Cup and now the Carling Cup - and with all the big teams half-heartedly shunting out B teams and first timers, is there really any real point to this cup any more?

Of course there is !! If this cup goes the FA Cup will follow. We may as well just have four teams in the country and screw the rest !! The majority of football fans support teams outside of the so called top four. I'd like to see those four piss off to a European Super league and let us have our old division one back !! You never know Cardiff might get in it then !! :p

don't get rid of it but take away the uefa cup spot - it'll happen sooner later - make it sooner.

Reluctantly I tend to agree with this .... the abolition of the Intertoto cup and the rebranding of the UEFA Cup as the "Europa League" next season will mean that there are still only three slots for English clubs and no possibility of qualification through the Intertoto (this due to UEFA's disgraceful decision to continue to allow clubs finishing 3rd in the Chumps' League group stages to enter the Europa League instead). I think that 5th and 6th in the Premiership should get into Europe as of right plus the winners of the FA Cup.

I was thinking about it the other day.

With 'Top Flight' teams constatly dominating the FA Cup and not really being arsed about the League Cup, why not havvbe it exclusively League (that is to say Championship to League) competition?

FA cup not quite exclusive to the 'top flight', Cardiff City in the final last year

Although, on reflection, I suppose Cardiff are Top Flight :D:D:D

I think it should be runners up and possibly third into the Yoofa. Champs into the Big Cup obviously

the competition doesn't need value - it's been daft for about 10 years. No other major league I can think of pays much lip service to any cup competition, let alone two.

Makes English footy unique then, that's a good thing in a homogenised world.

thats why the Cup Winners Cup went, innit? Only england and a couple of others care. Spain do,m but I can't think of anyone else really.

Without a UEFA spot you might as well get rid tho, no Premiership club would care about it.
