The British Wimbledon crowd are out of control disgrace

see look as L C says he happens all the time and crowd don't give due respect to the opponents, i only ever see this during Wimbledon british players playing, it matters less or more depending on the sport, its this whole remember '66 attitude, desperate is what i thought when i watched the huge crowd cheer madly for a second round match.

I really have no idea what you're getting at, '66 attitude? This was the 12th seed beating the 8th seed after going 2 sets down, it's a phenomenal achievement, if you can't get excited by that then there's no point you watching tennis.

The Wimbledon crowd cheer on the UK player, same as the French cheer on French players, the US cheer on US players and the Aussies cheer on Aussies. I've seen plenty worse at the French Open (plenty worse - repeated cat calls during serves and cheering net cords) but this is part and parcel of playing against somebody in their own back yard. And as for Davis Cup matches....

'66 my arse.

I remember the Wimbledon crowd going mad for Conners coming back against Pernforcz (spl?) years ago in a five-setter, and Chang too on occasion, both US players. And Boris against a British lad one year.

I was in the crowd that day. The atmosphere was amazing! The crowd do get behind certain players. I was on a court adjacent to No. 2 this year when Hewitt was playing - you should have heard the noise from the Aussie supporters. :D

On the whole I think the crowds are well-behaved and I watched the end of Murray's match on TV. You'll always get some people calling out at inappropriate times but on the whole I saw nothing wrong other than the crowd getting behind Murray in a big way. I did feel a little sorry for Gasquet though, having to battle against Murray and most of the crowd.

Wow. Old Court 1 wasn't it?* Fuck I loved Wimbledon when I was a young'un. Miroslav Mecir was my favourite.

And yes it was tough on Richard but imagine him coming back from 2-0 to win against Murray at Roland Garros? Wouldv'e been exactly the same.

*I miss old Court 1 :(

It was on Centre Court. Connors v Pernfors Back then I had a friend of a friend who worked as a steward and let us sneak on to Centre Court to use seats no one had occupied.

I remember Mecir although I'm not sure I ever saw him play at Wimbledon.

I was at Centre Court yesterday. Great day out, and I certainly got full value out of my ticket.

I think Murray is a twat but I have to give it to him. What he did yesterday was superb. Great play from both players in fact.

Regarding the crowd, there actually were a number of English amongst the crowd cheering for the French guy, which provoked murmurs and comments from the rest... :D

You lucky fucking bastard  :D

Just how dark was it by the end, because of the clever technology now used in cameras you don't really get an accurate impression watching it on TV.

 ;)

Maybe they just felt sorry for him; it would be very English to say "oh poor chap, look the other lad is getting all the support - right, c'mon boys, who knows the words to La Marseillaise? How about Frere Jacque?".

oh ai, there is no UK no more OK!

All players sould be made to wear these so that crowd doesn't distract them.

You've found a soulmate. It's so cute.

I tell you what, if it happens again on Wednesday, I'd make this suggestion to the Wimbledon officials to calm the crowd down:

Find the members of the crowd making all the noise, then give them an open handed slap in the face, jug of ice cold water tipped over the head, if you can get them sat down, get them to breath in and out of a paper bag so they are rebreathing the air they breath out for a minute or two.

Failing that, shoot them.

Can we just go straight to option 2?

they should take a leaf from the snooker crowds book and stfu ennit. Loved this insightful gem from John Virgo 2 years ago
'of course the problems with people eating crisps is that you have the rustle of of the bag, and the crunch of the actual eating'

Worth every penny, is Virgo.

Was that him posting on nobbing and sobbing about hating his dad then?

I watched some of the match last night and the highlights today. I don't think the crowd were that bad, intensely annoying but no more so than usual.

C'mon Tim!
C'mon Gregg!

Arrrggghhhh

That was the key difference for me though - cheering for your player, rather than cheering against the other player, which was happening a bit last night.

I think it's perfectly acceptable to be partisan, and with a game like last night's they were always going to get carried away, even if there was no British player on court, but I think they should still show respect to both players and let them play the match.

Before the Eaton game I said to my mum that it was even odds that someone would shout "Come on, Tim" at some point in the match - I'm not sure we'd got through the first game

Towards the last 2 or 3 games it was fairly dark, but if I could see the ball from the distance so could the players. Gasquet had started to ask for the end of the day's play a good half hour before it eventually ended. After several requests (and a rather long comfort break at the end of the fourth set) the umpire appeared to be telling him to stop asking about it.

Incidentally, I got my ticket through ticketmaster. Every evening a few hundred Centre Court tickets are released at precisely 8.30 pm for the following day's play. You have to be quick and hope for the best though. I tried to get tickets for last Saturday but I guess too many people were trying and I could not get any.

I suspect it's to do wth Murray declaring his hatred for the England football team a couple of years ago... the bloke near me had been chanting for Gasquet from the beginning of the game.

Yeah, I figured as much. Why can't we all just get along :( I mean, we don't even laugh at them wearing skirts anymore. Well, not much anyway.

Hardly 'out of control disgrace' though is it? It was a dramatic/tense/long match, you expect these things(surprised some don't understand this about sport). I hate how people just have to bitch about everything here and they can't appreciate the match.

If Gasquet wants to be a winner, he shouldn't let those things get to him.

This is true, I wouldn't go so far as to call it a disgrace, but like I said earlier some aspects were dissapointing.

Perhaps the OP got carried away with the excitement, happens to all of us doncha know ;)

Agreed, cheering for one side is natural, booing the other side for everything up to and including toilet breaks would be pantomime if it wasn't so ignorant - at least we're saved the embarrassment of people booing anthems at Wimbledon.

I do get it's about no more than having panto 'heros' and panto 'villians' for much of the crowd, but that doesn't mean it's okay. Bit of respect, even courtesy, would be nice.

When he's winning he's British, when he's losing he Scottish.

Happens all the time, look at David Coulthard.

Any Henman Hill is now Murray Mount. Imaginative that is.

Last night was aces. The light was fucking faded, but what ref was gonna call it off with one or two games to go??
