I'm going to see them here in Melbourne on August 31st.

I love them, but only seem to listen to them when very drunk these days?

I've seen them 4 time before - they've been great 3 times, but the last time at the Islington Academy was a bit shambolic with Anton Newcombe ranting at the crowd, at the band, at the gods and anyone else who would listen.

This resulted in about 10 songs over 90 minutes.

Sometimes his rants are funny, sometimes they go on a bit.

Always entertaining!

he's also prone to 'going off' stage and coming back all 'lively'.

He wouldn't perform at Islington until a bottle of vodka was delivered from the bar, via the crowd, to the stage - ha ha.

Then he started having a go about 'fish and chips'!

Saw them a few weeks back @ Guilfest. Most amusing especially as it was a kinda family audience on friday afternoon. The music is pure skag rock isn't ? Anton managed to piss the crowd off big time. There was no encore obviously. The vibe was heavy though, reminds me of JAMC meets Spirtualized.

d.you reckon he's for real? or just acting mental cos people expect him too?

Yeah, I think he is for real - your common garden fuck up!

God complex, drug addiction, dad commits suicide, love of rock 'n' roll - all very real methinks.

Only a proper fuck up would destroy their one stab at signing a major record deal by beating up his own band infront of the assorted labels clambering to sign the band?

i really enjoyed the first half, got a bit bored as it went on. i think i would really like some of their records though. the badboy act got a bit irritating and fake though. but basically, it was good rock and roll which is quite rare so well done to them i say

just got this email:confused:

"From The Management & The Record Label Of The Brian Jonestown Massacre

With regards to the incident that took place on Wednesday night 16th July 2008 at the Forum in London, the facts are to the story are:

1) There was no knife or knives involved in any shape or form in this incident
2) The cuts to Frankie Emerson were caused by some glass splinters
3) Frankie Emerson injuries were superficial to his arm & stomach, he was treated at the Royal Free Hospital in London .
4) These injuries were caused by horseplay by the band in their own changing room after the gig.
5) Anton Newcombe was questioned at Kentish Police Station to help the police with their enquiries & was released with no charge or caution .
6) Frankie Emerson did not press any charges on Anton Newcombe .
7) Any comments by anyone within or outside the media to the contrary are completely false .
8) The band will continue with their successful European tour ."

I left before the end. Everytime they built up any momentum it fell down during extended breaks between songs. I was bored!

Sounds like the dressing room was more entertaining.

“You fucking broke my sitar, motherfucker!” :D

HAHA!:D

"What's that on your hands?
"Blood"
"Where from?"
"People's faces"
And yes DiG is well worth a watch. A friend of mine who hand never heard of BJM before thought it was a spoof in a "This is Spinal Tap" style.

It took me age to convince her it was real.:hmm:

I saw these guys supporting BRMC (whose Peter Hayes used to play for them iirc) and thought they were great. Not much in the way of ranting or fighting going on but they sure can play. Catchy, bluesy garage rock of the kind that various dull-arse 60's copyists currently troubling radio playlists wish they could pull of with so much authenticity and style.

I only have one of their albums, 'thank god for mental illness', but I do like it a lot. It also features the longest song in my entire record collection

I saw them on that tour at the Carling Academy Brixton® and they did a great show but their gigs can be very very up and down.

Anyone else see them Upstairs At The Garage about 7 or 8 years ago when there was just about 30 people there? Amazing gig.

BUMP
Just watched Dig....(great film)
is there a BJM album thats better than others...id like to give a record a shot. Probably the more Velvet Underground the better. Im guessing earlier material was best?

From the film id all guess that matt hollywood was an important part of the band and it might not be the same without him. A talisman at least...

ETA: Jsut started watching this 2014 Glastonbury gig and Matt Hollywood seems to be back in the line up, which makes a nice happy ending :) <<<Great set btw, recommend. Glastonbury recordings are usually depressing, so far this is excellent
