The Boxing thread

Why so much booing???

Because the crowd - rightly in my view - felt that the Cuban was robbed and that DeGale was more interested in wrestling than in boxing.

DeGale deserved a medal after beating some very good fighters in these games, including some of the favourites and a boxer who had beaten him four times before. That final left a bit of a sour taste in the mouth though. A bad decision and worse refereeing.

I don't blame DeGale himself for doing whatever he had to though. He was in against boxers who were basically better than him a few times, so fair play to him. He's a decent boxer and evidently has the right temperament to raise his game under pressure. I think that Darren Sutherland will make a much better pro than he will though.

Anyone see the featherweight gold medal fight? Stopped in the first round, the Ukrainian was dishing out a fearful battering to his French opponent

Just seen the fight and tbh I thought the Cuban was at least as guilty as DeGale of turning that into a wrestling match, at least over the first two rounds. And it was the Cuban who did the biting so fuck him really.

The ref was dreadful, didn't step in quickly enough at any point

lol, what are you on about??? were you watching the same fight as everyone else?? the cuban instigated most of the holding, he got frustrated and tried to rough degale up but degale stuck mostly to his boxing and was the better fighter.

a superb result for the GB boxing team, they've had so much rubbish written about them in the press it's great to see them have the last laugh. well done lads :)

I think that's a pretty one-eyed and partisan version of events. The crowd, in my view had it right. The Cuban landed more good shots than DeGale did and yet he lost. Of course if the Cuban did bite him, then he should have been disqualified so it all balances out in the end.

DeGale isn't bad by any means but he's pretty limited - he's likely to be one of the two worst gold medallists pound for pound. In a way that's not much of a criticism of course - most people would rather be a limited gold medallist rather than a gloriously talented guy knocked out in the second round.

the crowd were booing at the fight because there were too many holds, it wasn't directed at one particualar fighter imo

DeGale was booed when he collected his medal. That's undeniable, the crowd did not take to him at all

Anyone see the Egan fight? Unbelievably bad judging.
Shocking stuff , but was he ever gonna get a decision against a Chinese boxer though?anyway thank fuck for our boxers, only for them the Irish Olympic team would be coming home empty handed again.

I'd heard it was bad but seeing it done so blatantly was something else. He was a very gracious loser though, a proper gent, unlike Barnes.

Hope there won't be some home town judging

And there was! I thought Egan had 2 shots that didn't score and the Chinese guy got a point for nothing.

That would have made it 10-9 to the Chinese boxer but who knows how he would have reacted to the pressure of the fight being closer? He could have gotten reckless allowing Egan to score more and win.
