Yep, means that there will now be two Ireland - Britain semis! Three medals for Ireland and two or three for Britain is definitely a result both teams would have taken when this competition started.

Sutherland - DeGale should be a good fight.

Do you think so?

The lad that couldn't make the weight was ranked number 1. There was a good shout for most of the 7.

more golds for Britain would be great though! ;)

Once Gavin failed to make the weight, yes I do think that three medals out of seven is a very good return. The yanks for instance got one medal out of nine and quite a few of their boxers were highly rated. Ireland's three medals out of five is incredibly good.

My predictions for the six Irish or British medallists. Probably all wrong:

Superheavies:

I reckon at this stage that Price has a fair crack at gold for Britain. I really didn't rate him coming into this competition, but he's been putting people away and the division is much weaker than any of the others.

Lightheavies:

If things go according to form, Egan should beat Jeffries in the semis and then himself would have a good shot at gold.

Middleweights:

I can't pick a winner between Sutherland and DeGale, but I think that the winner will be up against it a bit in the final. The Cuban looks excellent.

Light Flyweights:

Barnes will have to put in the fight of his life to beat the Chinese world champion in the semi.

Apparently, Jeffries isn't interested in going pro and is talking about the 2012 Olympics.

Sutherland, the Irish Middleweight, has already announced that he's going pro after the games and he looks to have a style that's much better suited to the pro sport. He likes to fight inside and body punch and he has real power in both hands.

I would expect that DeGale will also go professional. As will Price surely, given the relatively big money a half decent heavyweight can make in the pro game.

I don't know about Barnes or Egan. It's tough to make a go of it as a light fly professional - the opposition is good, but the fights are tough to sell. As for Egan, he's very good but he has a style that is very much adapted to the amateur sport.

On an unrelated note, apparently DeGale and Sutherland have fought five times before. Sutherland won on four occasions, with DeGale scraping a 23-22 victory in the other fight. I hear that they were all very exciting fights so this one should be a cracker.

Nice posts Nige', I agree with your predictions.

Loking fwd to them all, I've enjoyed the boxing tremendously, 'cept for the scoring which despairs me.

My nephew (6) and nieces (9, 10 & 15) have been staying this week and they have loved it too.

Especially Paddy Barnes, they really *heart* him.

Weirdly, I've actually got used to the scoring at this stage. It was annoying the hell out of me at the start, but aside from a couple of decisions involving Chinese boxers, it is actually quite consistent.

Clean punches to the head, with the white part of the glove, get a score about two times out of three. Clean punches to the body get scored about one time out of three. By and large this ratio remains roughly constant, and the right boxer does generally win.

If we watched this number of four rounders with professional scoring, I suspect that we'd actually have seen more robberies than we have done with this system.

Great stuff, keeping him at arm's length and picking him off when he gets the chance

Excellent! Never in doubt that, Sutherland couldn't really come up with an answer to that.

DeGale in the Middleweight final

Good performance alright, I was well disappointed with Sutherland, seemed to have nothing in the tank whatsoever.

I just hope Kenny can make it 1 - 1

Bugger, fell asleep for the DeGale - Sutherland fight

So light heavys and super heavys are on sometime after 12. I will be awake for those :D

Oooh, controversy in the fight between the Cuban and the Mongolian. Decision given to the Mongolian when it seemed blatently obvious that the Cuban won it

David Price up now against Cammarelle. 5 points down already after the first round. He's going to have to up his game a bit.

eta: Woah, a thumping left from Cammarelle puts Price on the ropes in the 2nd and the ref stops it.

Bronze for Price.

What I heard is a romanian judge (?) has said that he is aware of country reps being approached and asked if they would like certain judges.

Something like that. He also reckons money has changed hands.

Ive not seen much boxing, but the commentator echoed what you just said, that there have been some dodgy calls and crowds booing decisions.

Apparently the head of the IOC is minded to drop boxing entirely from the Olympic sporting rosta, and he was there today when some fucked up decision was made
