The boozers of Hay on Wye

As a birthday pressie I'll soon be stomping the hills of Hay On Wye - can't wait! - but does anyone know the best apres-trek boozers to check out?

I've got my map and guidebooks ready, but if there's any little nooks and crannies I should know about, let's hear 'em please!

There's one on the edged of town called 'The Last in First out', i.e. from Wales to England. It's like a timewarp back to the 50's featuring Ales you'll never heard of, and probably won't again.
It usually looks closed but isn't.

There's plenty of others as well though in town - all nice.

If you're further afield , The Skirrid's nice, The Star in Talybont ( bring sleeping bag as they let you sleep it off on the floor )

A word to the wise - even if you're popping out for a late night few beers - Take a rucksack!

You will start looking through the piles of old books left outside shops (esp. the ones in the little courtyard in front of the castle) with honesty boxes, and you'll find about 20 that you want and then you'll have to cart them back to wherever you're staying.

(Not so bad if you're staying in the town, I stayed in a campite up a steep hill just the other side of the Wye, and had to cart a load of books back!)

this place, maesyronen chapel, is about 3 or 4 miles from hay, a lung-bursting walk up a steep hill, the view from there is fantastic, it's an old picture, but we stayed in the chapel about 5 years ago, the chapel is still a working chapel, there's a cottage attached

You will love Hay - take an empty case for book purchases - but read about Kilvert and Armittage (the Hay Poison plot) before you go ....

(Kilvert recorded rail scenes well Ed !)
