The Book Geek Thread (design and sh*t like that)

I just noticed that one of the new Doris Lessing books I have on my desk has quite a beautiful cover

Maybe it looks better in real life, but it is simple and beautiful.

My copy of The Hobbit looks like this.....

(bless it, it's a bit bedraggled but it is 35 years old)

Same story as my copy of Dune......

in fact i love old sci-fi covers.......

God. That's the same as my mum's old copy of the Hobbit, if I remember, that I read when I was a kid. Don't know where it went to :(

Also the same cover of the first three Dune books, my dad's.

The new Dune covers are even worse than the 90s ones

This thread makes me feel kind of sad :(

I think it's beautiful too. The simple ones often are.

From the book covers website in my OP, I love these:

And I just found this Book Design Blog – oh that I had all day *sigh*

Also, do we have a 'Stationery Lust' thread? Because I think we need one. With lots of pictures and descriptions of beautiful stationery.

I like notebooks. Nom.

I live the smell of a new book - and the feel of the pages. And then what you have finished the book I like the 'weathering' which shows how much you have enjoyed it.

When we moved I decided to have a cull of my books and sent quite a few boxes to the charity shops. It was hard :(. There were some obvious "must keep forever!" titles and some obvious "why did I buy this?" ones but the worst were the middling "I enjoyed this book but will don't think I will read it again" titles - it was really, really hard to let them physically go. And worse when I would go round the charity shops and see them on sale. I kept wantingto buy them back :o

The missus has a gorgeous edition of Murakami's Norwegian Wood -

It's a box with the two parts of the book fitted inside with different colour covers. It makes reading them feel kinda sacred somehow.

Our house is exploding with books (not helped by the fact that when we moved in together there were two of quite a lot). But I wouldn't have it any other way

Cor – that's beautiful!

I adore Persephone books *swoon at the thought*, their uniform grey covers that rich coulorful patterns inside the covers and matching bookmarks.
I really like their classic editions too because they are bound so that the books open up almost flat and the text is quite beautiful, its like being handed a sort of wordy platter to devour at your leisure.
I often have cause to visit their bookshop and it's wonderful and I like their ethos too.

I like MIlan Kundera and thought that the cover of Laughable Loves is quite cool linky

VP I think inside you there is a librarian screaming to get out :p
Can anyne recommend me soem particularly beautiful poetry books? I bought the Tate's book n William Blake with his sketches in, that one is nice t examine with a cup of tea and a biscuit. Have a book by Felix Dennis too with some beautiful illustrations.
What about art books? I've found that Phaidon publish some beautiful books. Bought one on Klimt (one of my favourite artists) the cover was golden and the layout felt spacious with full page pics of some paintings with informations and what not on the adjascent page. Very very enjoyable book.
