Gospel of St Thomas at first glance may appear simply a Gnostic text, however I suspect it derives a lot of its theological approach from Mystic traditons that had long existed, both in Judaism and the wider Middle East - it was supposed to have found favour with the followers of Mani who also believed in the God within and a dualistic world(Spirit/Physical)
Equally it is worth comparing the "inner life" ideas with that of Buddha
