If my future self had visited me circa 2001 and told me one day I would think Dudley from Harry Potter would make a fine Sherlock Holmes, I would have told myself to do one. But after seeing his breathtaking performance in The Pale Blue Eye, I would love to see Harry Melling taking up the part.

I thought Jonny Lee Miller in Elementary was a pretty good take, and a far better way of making Sherlock Holmes modern than the god awful Sherlock show with Dr Strange Benedict Cumberbatch

Jeremy Brett is still the best though. Such a pity he was never able to do all the stories.
Before I watched Elementary, I heard it was a knock-off of BBC's Sherlock. Once I started watching it, it clearly wasn't and far superior.

Elementary had a really good first series and then just coasted on the good will from that but was mostly very poor.

Honorable mentions to Nicol Williamson

I've always enjoyed Billy Wilder's directed take on the character..
Holmes played by Robert Stephens and Watson Colin Blakely.
Christopher Lee as Mycroft.
Received mixed reviews at the time...

I've gone for jeremny brett as he featured in productions true to the stories as written whereas rathbone played Holmes in a range of truly peculiar films
Talking about peculiar, have you read Neil Gaiman's short story, A Study in Emerald?

Without giving too much away, there's a strong Lovecraft element to it.
