I think locals would prbably call it Islington? Its not Clerkenwell or Hoxton , though anyone who has moved there in the last 10 years probably thinks it is.
The Wenlock Arms is in postal district N1, which everyone refers to as Islington. It is officially in LB Hackney's Hoxton Ward. However, prior to 2002 the area was within Wenlock Ward. My copy of the 1943 County of London Plan shows Wenlock as being part of Shoreditch, with the areas west and south of the canal basin being Finsbury.
Beer in the Evening.com have given up on the debate and still describe the Wenlock Arms as being in "Wenlock". This is obviously a ploy to keep non-CAMRA members at a safe distance, as Hackney's Wenlock Barn Estate is closer to the New North Road, with nearby blocks being branded as the Shepherdess Walk estate.
I've always referred to both the general area and the location of the Wenlock Arms as "off the City Road".
I agree re decor, v.nice looking boozer and also smoke free BUT, and serious but......very bad problem with the drains. I was in there a few weeks ago with a friend and the smell was so bad we had to move to a different pub.
A work colleague was in last week and didnt notice anything so it might depend on where you are sitting but be careful
Try the Seven Stars on Carey Street WC2 behind the Law Courts. Their famous cat is called Tom Paine and tolerates people in his pub in a typical cat-like way.
