The best Motown group ever

the andantes (louvain demps, jackie hicks, marlene barrow) deserve a mention. by no means the greatest themselves but appeared as backing singers on some of the greatest songs from motown.

Smokey Robinson & the Miracles (not because they were better than the Tempts, Gladys Knight, Martha Reeves, the Four Tops etc., it's just that no one's mentioned them yet). I also like Smokey's voice.

The Supremes deserve a mention too, they set the standard for girl bands in the 1960's and 70's.

Incidentally, an embarrassing memory of mine; I once posted a message on Martha Reeves's website saying my favourite song of hers was "Walk In My Shoes" when it wasn't her who'd sung it, but Gladys Knight. Oops! She was very decent about it though.

gotta love smokey.

the trouble with the supremes is they had a great singer in flo, who was criminally underused, and a bit of a cack singer in diana, who got all the leads. mary wilson was replaced by the andantes for some of the recordings as well.

The Motown singer who always gets forgotten is Brenda Holloway. An absolutely great voice. Did some fantastic songs. Was based out in California rather than Detroit, and so never got the promotion she deserved. Easily my favourite of the Motown women.

Yeah, Mary Wilson's autobiography Dreamgirl's a good read though I found I liked Diana less after I finished it than I did before. She made it big time at the expense of the others.

It was tragic what happened to Flo, I remember her death (in 1976) well. I quite liked the 70's Supremes though with Cindy Birdsong etc.
