Volkswagen's very pretty Karmann Ghia

Shouldn't that be Karmann Ghia's very pretty VW

NSU RO80

A sort of Audi A4 30 years before the A4. Its from 1967 and must have looked incredible then, still looks vaugely current.

Ro80 had problems with the rotor tips, and with the peculiar clutch button on top of the gear stick, IIRC it was the car that broke NSU.

I never had more fun in a car than in my Golf Cabby, would love another one.

Off hand I can't think of a nicer looking car than the MK1 Golf for simple, pretty lines.

The Wankel motor almost broke Mazda and Suzuki too (the other two big investors in spam tin shaped combustion chambers). Mazda remain the only firm to have even semi success with it.

928 for me. Their look is still a guiding force for car design. Haven't dated one bit.

I is drove a Gullwing from Southwards museum in NZ. Heavy, heavy gearbox but

Brabus Maybach

If I didn't have to worry about money, global warming, peak oil, Cornish country lanes etc.

Other contenders; the BMW M1 was a beautiful car, the NSU RO80 was far ahead of its time and I also liked the looks of the early Porsche 911s (before they started getting heavier). The 911 RS was also a truly great driver's car.

Yep, sadly wrote my GTi off, which will teach me for being an old-boy racer... :(

that car is a piece of junk and it's built like shit. Audi and VW consistently come in with below average reliabilty ratings

Yeah, that's why there are so many still on the road, effortlessly sailing through MOTs year after year

VAG may have reliability issues now, but they certainly didn't 15 - 20 years ago.

Another one for the 917 in John Wyer Gulf racing colours.

LOL!
Wheras American cars are the shining bastions of ground breaking design, build quality & reliability, yes? :D:D

Anyway, aside from the obvious choices, one of my nominations would be The 1998 - 2001 Audi A6 Avant

Redefined the estate car & all others followed.
Superbly built car too.

As a Bimmer fan, I always loved the 3.0 CS/CSi. Wanted to buy one, but ended up with the "practical" 635CSi instead:

Also a big fan of the Mercedes SS:
