Imagine if you downloaded all these apps and used them all at the same time :D

I guarantee you wouldn't get any viruses or spyware...

Nowt to worry about, all it means is that you need to upgrade to the new version 8 :) It's still free, and the update was painless on my PC :)

(Re: AVG Free 8.0)

I've just attempted to upgrade, but it won't let me 'cos I'm still running XP SP1. (:o)

Should I switch to another free anti-virus (-and if so, which one?), or will SP1 be a problem with those too?

 :)

What should you do if Avira will not update and every time you try it, a box comes up saying 'The internet connection failed'?

Anyone had this problem or got any ideas?

Re: AVG 8.0. This has cause me so much grief with losing my internet connection every five minutes even with most of the shields disabled.:mad:. Why can't computer bods just leave something along when its working.

Have uninstalled AVG and have downloaded Avast.

Why not go through the upgrades path to SP3 or is there also an issue with AVG on these OS builds or with your hardware

I upgraded to v8.0 running on Windows XP, no problems at all. (I don't work for AVG). Although fuck knows if it's actually doing anything. And while I'm here I'd like to recomend Scilab, just like Mathcad but free! I wrote my first decent program that predicted macroscopic ion channel currents from microscopic models, and it didn't half give me the horn.

Lot of dissatisfaction with AVG 8.0 on this thread. So its not just me. Apart from causing connection problems it is criciticised for being "bloated and buggy".
Almost all of the complaining on that thread seems to be about the upgrade process and nag screen. Considering the size of its user base, AVG doesn't seem to be attracting that many adverse comments, and every review I've seen has been positive.

Quick question - is the in-built windows firewall any good, or do I need another?

I've got AVG 8.0, seems to run OK

On my home PC I tried out AVG 8 and it flatly refuses to scan. Very odd. I've tried Avast! which seems pretty light but takes an age to scan my drives on what is a fairly fast PC so I'm looking for a replacement. Ace thread :)

I bought a three machine Kaspersky Internet Security licence a while ago for £14 and have to say it was well worth the cost.

Two more big names to add to the list:

ESET NOD32 anti-virus It's supposed to cost £29 p.a., but you can have the free 30 day trial indefinitely if you uninstall and reinstall every 30 days. I've been doing this for over a year. You don't have to keep downloading it - just reinstall your original download and it auto-updates the definitions. Given that it's one of the highest-rated paid for programs, it's probably the best freebie out there, no?

Microsoft Security Essentials MS is in the game at last with an anti-virus, anti-spyware, rootkit thing. It's in beta, and the test programme is full, (and they never wanted Brits in it anyway) but you can still get it, as explained here: http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=4818

It's been highly rated by those strict Germans: http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9134753

But it's still beta and it sometimes gobbles CPU.

I seem to be running MSE, NOD32, AVG LinkScanner and PC Tools Spyware Doctor at the moment. Not quite sure why. Just can't resist fiddling.

I get free kaspersky with PO broadband and I've ended up taking it off all the machines - it's a pain in the arse. It constantly says licence has expired and you have to re-install it. I wouldn't pay for it.
