what i think i am looking for is a slow paced, "dark" i suppose... intricate worlds ...slow paced is good..... black humour.... although i am willing to give anything a go if it is well written....
some tv stuff i like non-anime... if that helps: twin peaks (season 1), dennis potter stuff, heroes is worth a gander, south park, monkey dust, jam.....etc...

it's... quite good... it has an echo of 2000 leagues under the sea but has it's own story...
flcl is fine for a beginner... although it does have a self referential aspect (ffs it's a gainax) it is accessible to everybody
